Stanford head coach David Shaw announced that redshirt junior Josh Nunes will be the Cardinal starting quarterback to open the 2012 season.
Nunes gets the nod over sophomore Brett Nottingham, who was believed to be the frontrunner for the job coming out of spring. Nottingham was the primary backup for Andrew Luck in 2011, throwing for 78 yards and a touchdown while appearing in six games. While neither Nottingham nor Nunes distinguished himself as a clear cut favorite for the job, a strong spring game from Nunes (167 yards and two touchdowns) might have been the deciding factor.
There's no doubt that Nunes has his work cut out for him. Not only is he being called upon to replace Luck, but he hasn't seen game action since 2010, when threw two passes in four games.
Stanford opens the season against San Jose State on Aug. 31.
