Bowlsby was offered by the Big 12 commissioner job probably because of how well-respected he is within the college athletics culture. He has done a good job at Stanford, helped bring about the hiring of current and very successful Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott, and has done a lot of work inside committees and hiring other major people in college athletics.
The Big 12 needs a commissioner after they fired Dan Beebe, and considering how well-respected Bowlsby is, he could be the perfect man to lead the conference in the right direction with regards to consolidating the efforts of the conference to bringing them up to the level of the Big Ten and the Pac-12.
Bowlsby has arranged a meeting with Stanford football staff at 10 am later today, reports Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News.
