College Football Rankings: Stanford Poised For Top Five

The sixth-ranked Stanford Cardinal should move up to the top 5 after obliterating the Arizona Wildcats in the new college football rankings with fifth-ranked Florida State falling to Oklahoma.

The Stanford Cardinal look like they're in great shape to move back up into the top-5 for the second consecutive season. They faced a stiff test on Saturday night in the desert, but eventually put distance between themselves and the Arizona Wildcats, pounding them for the second straight year.

Stanford is currently ranked sixth in the AP and Coaches Poll, and they only need one team to drop ahead of them. Lucky for them [no pun intended], one top five team had to fall on Saturday with two of them matched up against each other. The fifth-ranked Florida St. Seminoles will probably drop a few spots after falling to the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. That means by default that Stanford will move up, almost certainly to the fifth position.

Could Stanford move ahead of other top-five teams? The second-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide tore over North Texas, and the third-ranked LSU Tigers slogged through a victory over Mississippi State. The fourth-ranked Boise St. Broncos beat Toledo. Unless Wisconsin or Florida do some leap-frogging, Stanford should climb up to that coveted spot.
