The Stanford Cardinal got out to a 10-2 start in non-conference play this season. The UCLA Bruins have won their last three games in a row and are looking to regain their previous UCLA glory. And in a tightly contested match from the tip, it was the Cardinal that would eventually prevail thanks to a Josh Huestis' block at the end of regulation to keep the Bruins at bay, taking their first game of conference play 60-59 at Maples Pavilion Thursday night.
Sophomore guard Aaron Bright lead the way for the Cardinal (11-2, 1-0), scoring 16 points in 33 minutes, including going 4-8 from downtown. Chasson Randle had a rough night from the floor, shooting only 3-12 for the game, but still finished with 10 points, while Josh Owens added nine and eight boards. John Gage added 10 off the bench.
The Bruins (7-6, 0-1) were in it all night, finishing the first half the same way the did the game; one point behind. Senior guard Lazeric Jones led all scorers with a career high 26 points, including 4-6 from three point land. Jones unfortunately was the one who got stuffed by Huestis at the end of the game, a bit of a sour note to his highlight night.
Stanford insider Kyle Bonagura also tweeted before the game that guard Gabriel Harris will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. We wish him a speedy recovery.
