San Jose State defensive back Bene Benwikere earned his second Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award this season, it was announced on Monday.
The junior cornerback helped force two turnovers in the Spartans' 47-7 rout of New Mexico State on Saturday.
Benwikere returned a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown, and intercepted a pass to lead the team with four on the season. He would have returned that interception for a touchdown, but the score was negated by a penalty. San Jose State would go on to score a touchdown anyway.
Four Spartans have combined to win the WAC Defensive Player of the Week award six times. Benwikere and defensive end Travis Johnson have each been named twice, while linebacker Vince Bugahiar and safety Cullen Newsome have each one the award once.
Benwikere has 47 tackles, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries on the season. He has returned one interception for a touchdown.
