San Jose State vs. Utah State recap: Aggies outgun Spartans, 49-27

The Utah State Aggies outscored the San Jose State Spartans 49-27 on Saturday afternoon in the WAC opener for both teams.

Utah State took a 28-3 lead in the second quarter when Chuckie Keeton connected with Travis Van Leeuwen for a 21-yard touchdown pass, but the Spartans would fight back. David Fales, who threw for 467 yards on the day, threw two touchdown passes to close the half on a 17-0 run, and the Spartans were down just 28-20 at halftime.

However, Kerwynn Williams, who had run for a 50-yard touchdown earlier, opened the third quarter with an 86-yard touchdown scamper for Utah State. The Aggies would score again just four minutes later, and the 42-20 deficit was too much to overcome for San Jose State.

Junior receiver Noel Grigsby hauled in 11 catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns in the loss for the Spartans, who only managed a net total of four rushing yards. Utah State had a more balanced attack, passing for 273 yards and rushing for 212 behind Williams' 176 yards.

San Jose State travels to play UTSA next week, while Utah State will host New Mexico State.
