San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski has been named the MLS Player of the Month for September, the league announced Thursday.
This is Wondolowski's third Player of the Month award this year, making him the first player in MLS history to win the award three times in a single season. He previously won the honor in April and June.
Wondolowski scored four goals and picked up two assists in the month of September. With three games left in the season, he leads all players for the Golden Boot award with 22 goals. Real Salt Lake's Alvaro Saborio sits in second with 17 goals.
San Jose sits in first place in the Western Conference with 61 points and a record of 18-6-7. The Earthquakes next game is Oct. 6, when they take to road to face the Colorado Rapids.
The MLS Player of the Month is selected by a panel of journalists who cover the league on a regular basis.
