With just a 1.5 game lead over the rival Dodgers, the 41-52 Padres have been red hot since the All-Star break, losing just three of their 10 contests so far this second half. San Francisco has been just as good, losing just two of their contests since the break, setting up a showdown of streaking clubs at McCovey Cove.
Clayton Richard (7-10, 3.86) squares off with Ryan Vogelsong (7-4, 2.31). Richard was solid in his last start after 8.1 innings of four run ball against the Astros for his seventh win of the year, while Vogelsong took a no decision after six innings of one run ball against the Braves. Volquez was lights out in his last start after a complete game shutout, while Bumgarner took the loss in his last outing after seven innings of three run ball.
