Two-run homers from Pablo Sandoval and Brett Pill would prove not enough as the Giants fell to the D-backs 5-4 Saturday afternoon.

Presswire

After the San Francisco Giants watched ace Tim Lincecum get shelled in his Opening Day start on Friday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Madison Bumgarner took to the mound hoping for better results. Unfortunately they did not come as Aaron Hill knocked a pair of homers off the Giants left hander, helping Arizona put the Giants away by the score of 5-4 for the second straight game at Chase Field.

Bumgarner (L 0-1) struggled for the second straight season in his opening day game, allowing four earned runs in four innings pitched, giving up seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Hill took him deep in both the first and second innings, while Chris Young added a RBI double in between.

Pablo Sandoval got the Giants rally started off in the fourth, launching a two-run homer off Daniel Hudson to right field. Brett Pill made his 2012 debut pinch hitting in the seventh, making the most of the appearance with a laser shot for a two-run jack of his own, bringing the Giants to within one.

J.J. Putz earned his second save in as many games, while Hudson (W 1-0) finished with the win after giving up four runs in 6.2 innings of work, along with two walks and four strikeouts. Pablo Sandoval finished 2-3 for the game, while Buster Posey was 0-4.

Matt Cain will make his season debut on Sunday, facing off against Josh Collmenter in a battle of right-handers. First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. PT as the Black and Orange look to avoid being swept to start the season.
