Giants vs. Padres MLB Schedule Preview: San Francisco Needs Wins To Hold Off Diamondbacks

It was a bad start to the series for the Giants, losing game one-of-four to the Padres to the tune of 5-3. Tim Lincecum lasted only five innings and gave up three earned runs off of seven hits. To make matters worse, the Arizona Diamondbacks won their game, moving within two games of first place in the National League West division. San Francisco sorely needs to get a win here, both to bury the Padres further and keep Arizona from getting to the top of the division.

Matt Cain will try and set things straight tonight for San Francisco, he'll be taking the mound in the number two slot for their rotation in lieu of Jonathan Sanchez, who is out of commission for the time being. Cain is 7-4 on the season with a 3.02 earned run average. His last outing was solid, but he was given the no-decision in a Giants 5-2 loss at the hands of the Chicago Cubs. Cain pitched seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball, but Brian Wilson blew the save in the last frame.

Dustin Moseley is taking the mound for the Padres. He hasn't had a great year thus far, with a 2-8 record and a 3.07 ERA, and is on a four-game winless streak. His last win was back on June 3rd against Houston, and since then he's had two no-decisions and two losses, one of those losses coming in his last outing, in which he only lasted four innings. Moseley gave up seven hits and five runs, though only two of them were earned.

The Giants sorely need to get back in the win column tonight. The game is set for 7:15 p.m. tonight.
