Giants vs Reds, MLB Scores: Edgar Renteria Walks Off in 13th for 4-3 Reds Win

It was a muggy night at the Great American Ballpark this evening as the San Francisco Giants faced off with the Cincinnati Reds. Both teams got on the board early but slowed down considerably as Ryan Vogelsong and Dontrelle Willis settled into the game, eventually forcing extra innings. And after 13 innings it was former Giant Edgar Renteria eventually breaking the stalemate, topping the Giants 4-3.

Vogelsong lasted for six innings tonight, allowing all three of the Reds runs in the first two innings of the game. Vogey was noticeably affected by the steamy conditions but adjusted nicely, keeping Cincy to seven hits along with two walks and one punch out. Then it was the bullpen’s turn as Sergio Romo, Ramon Ramirez and Javier Lopez kept the Reds in check through the ninth inning.

Carlos Beltran started San Francisco off on the right foot with his first hit as a Giant, an RBI single in the first. Aubrey Huff added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, then down one run in the eighth Eli Whiteside hit a clutch double to center, scoring Huff for the tying run of the game.

Guillermo Mota faced a bases loaded situation in the tenth with only one out until Nate Schierholtz caught Todd Frazer’s shallow pop fly, then proceeded to throw out Joey Votto at home with a laser beam to Whiteside for the inning ending double play. Mota handed the ball off to Brian Wilson in the 13th, (L 6-3) who was tabbed with his third loss of the season by Renteria.

With the loss the Giants move to 61-45 on the year.

The Giants will send out Madison Bumgarner (6-9 3.56 ERA) to face Mike Leake (8-6 4.04 ERA) on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:10 pm PT. Coverage can be seen on CSN Bay Area and heard on KNBR 680 AM.
