For the second straight season, the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants prospects on display at the Futures Game were able to shine in a US victory. The 2011 XM All-Star Futures Game saw the US team take an early 3-0 lead, blow that lead in the sixth and come back in the eighth to grab a 6-4 victory over the World team. Jarred Cosart earned the victory while Matt Harvey locked down the save with the final out of the ninth inning.
The US worked their way to a 3-0 lead with runs in the first, second and fifth innings. Jason Kipnis hit a solo home run to lead off the first, Wil Myers added an RBI groundout, and Grant Green drove in Gary Brown for the third run in the fifth. The World bounced back with four runs in the sixth inning as they jumped all over Drew Pomeranz in the sixth inning getting three hits and a walk to take the lead. The US returned the favor in the eighth inning with a three-run rally to take the lead they would hold onto and win.
The Bay Area had a strong day at Chase Field as A's prospect Grant Green and Giants prospect Gary Brown shined. Green was named MVP of the game after going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and the game-tying run scored in the eighth inning after replacing Kipnis at second base. Brown was 1-for-2 with a single, stolen base and run scored in the fifth inning. All in all a solid day for both men. We'll be back with more specific recaps on Green and Brown tomorrow.
