The Oakland Athletics wrapped up the 2011 MLB Draft Draft picks with twenty picks that brought them through the 50th round, with their last pick of Travis Pitcher out of Cypress College with pick number 1,516. Fittingly enough, Pitcher is a right handed pitcher. These are the kinds of exciting tidbits you learn on day three of the Major League Baseball draft. People think NFL sixth and seventh rounders are obscure, but MLB late round picks go well beyond that. It's why guys like Mickey McConnell get drafted late.
The most "notable" day three pick for the Oakland A's was probably Brett Geren, a high school catcher from San Ramon. For those who think the name sounds familiar, he's the son of manager Bob Geren. The latter part of day three of the MLB Draft can often turn into the ultimate in nepotism as teams often draft the sons of managers and general managers. It's one of the many joys of a 50 round draft.
