The 2011 MLB Draft is less than twelve hours away and its time to take one last look at the draft order in advance of the 4:00pm pacific start live on the MLB Network. The Oakland Athletics hold the No. 18 pick, while the San Francisco Giants hold the No. 28 pick in the first round. The teams will have five minutes to make picks in the first round, followed by one minute to pick in the compensation round. Those two rounds will be broadcast on the MLB Network on Monday.
As the draft order information below indicates, the Giants will also be making a selection in the first compensatory round. They hold the 49th overall pick in that round as compensation for the Dodgers decision to sign Juan Uribe. Since Uribe qualified as a Type B free agent, the Giants get the compensation pick in the sandwich round, but nothing else. In an additional compensation move, the A's do not have a second round pick because of their decision to sign relief pitcher Grant Balfour. The Tampa Bay Rays received the A's second round pick as well as a compensation pick in the sandwich round because Balfour qualified as a Type A free agent. MLB.com describes Type A and Type B free agents, while mymlbdraft.com provides a list of both types of free agents.
