The first round of MLB All Star Game ballot results have been released for the 2011 game and Giants catcher Buster Posey holds a solid lead over Braves catcher Brian McCann. Posey has pulled in 785,314 votes and leads by over 151,000 votes. Posey is out for the season with a broken leg and torn ankle ligaments so even if he maintains his lead, he’ll likely be replaced by McCann or Yadier Molina.
The Giants have two other players in the top five at their respective positions. Pablo Sandoval is third among NL third basemen in spite of missing the last month of action with a broken hand. Sandoval is expected to start a rehab assignment this weekend in Fresno and rejoin the Giants in the next couple of weeks.
Freddy Sanchez is fifth among second baseman where Brandon Phillips leads the voting. Sanchez leads qualifying Giants hitters with a .292 batting average. He’s having a solid season but at close to 500,000 votes back of first place Phillips, it’s unlikely Sanchez will make up the ground. Of course, we’ve seen some crazy All Star Game campaigns in recent years, so maybe Giants fans can pull it off.
