After six straight wins at home the San Francisco Giants continued their road woes today against the Chicago Cubs, falling by a score of 11-4 at Wrigley Field. Madison Bumgarner once again got the short end of the stick, filled with lucky hits, untimely walks, and another start without a win.
Bumgarner (L 0-6) lasted for 6 innings while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with two walks and 6 strikeouts. Bummy didn’t pitch all that bad, it was simply a matter of poor timing of the Cubs walks and hits that knocked him out of the game prematurely. The bullpen didn’t fare any better as Jeremy Affeldt, Guillermo Mota, and Dan Runzler gave up 8 combined runs in only two innings of work.
Cody Ross managed to hit his second home run of the season in the eighth but it was already too little too late as the Giants were well behind at that point already. Aubrey Huff had an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the fifth, but that was it for the Giants offense today.
Ryan Dempster (W 2-4) came out of his recent funk in a big way, pitching 6 innings with 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and an impressive 11 strikeouts.
With the loss the Giants move to 21-17 for the year with an 11-12 record on the road. Full box score can be found here.
The Giants will have their second meeting with the Cubbies tomorrow as Ryan Vogelsong (2-0 3.05 ERA) will take on Doug Davies for the Cubs in his first start of the year. First pitch is set for 4:10 tomorrow afternoon with coverage on the FOX network and KNBR 680 AM.
