Giants vs. Pirates, MLB Scores: Madison Bumgarner Pitches Well, Still Winless As Giants Shutout 2-0

With runners on first and second with one out, Miguel Tejada hit into yet another double play and the San Francisco Giants' rally hopes were crushed in game two of a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates, losing 2-0. Pablo Sandoval drew a walk and then Cody Ross hit a single to centerfield, but that's where it ended. A Pat Burrell flyout and patented double play ball from Tejada put the series at a game apiece.

Madison Bumgarner broke down early in the second inning, giving up a single to Neil Walker, a double to Steve Pearce, and then  a single to Chris Snyder. He'd recover and get out of the jam with two strikeouts to end the inning, but the damage was done. He ended up going six innings, giving up five hits and the one run, while walking one (intentional) and striking out seven. Still, despite the relatively solid outing, the Giants are shutout and Bumgarner is handed his fourth loss and is still without a win on the season.

Jason McDonald got his first win of the year, throwing six innings and giving up four hits while walking four and fanning three. The Giants just could not hit this guy, who came into the game with a miserable earned run average. The Pirates would cycle through their pitchers, and eventually give up six hits overall, but no runs in the end. Dan Runzler yielded the Pirates' second score, when Jose Tabata singled off of Guillermo Mota to score Brandon Wood, who initially reached as one of two hits that Runzler allowed.

For some positives, Cody Ross went 2-for-3 with two singles on the day, and players like Pablo Sandoval and Pat Burrell did have some good looking at-bats when it all came down to it. Still, they stranded too many and couldn't get anything done against a struggling pitcher. In the end, two pitchers came into this game sorely needing a win and both of them played like it, McDonald was just better.

Trying something new today, going to leave the notes I made for every at-bat during the game in the post instead of just using them to build the recap. On Thursday, Ryan Vogelsong will get his first start and that game will begin at 9:30 a.m.
