Just as the Phillies were closing in on sending Matt Cain to the showers, Cain gutted out a tough third out to escape the seventh inning with his 3-0 shutout intact. The Giants had Javier Lopez and Santiago Casilla warming up in the bullpen in case Cain was unable to get Shane Victorino out. Bruce Bochy visited the mount after Cain walked Gload but let Cain face Victorino. Had the Flyin Hawaiian reached based, Lopez likely would have gotten the call against Utley.
Cain would appear to be finished for the day as he threw 119 pitches in his seven innings of work. Cain gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five. He is due up third in the bottom of the seventh and will likely get a pinch hitter. With Utley due up in the top of the eighth, expect Javier Lopez to come on in relief.
On the Phillies side, Ryan Gload pinch-hit for starter Cole Hamels, which means Hamels day is done after going six innings and giving up three runs. The ageless wonder Jose Contreras will come on in relief for the Phillies.
