NFL Roster Cuts: 49ers Waive Wide Receiver Brett Swain

The San Francisco 49ers began to clear up a crowded wide receiver corps Friday by waiving Brett Swain, according to NFL reporter Adam Caplan.

Swain had a solid camp and has shown the ability to be a special teams contributor in the past, but there simply wasn't nearly enough room at the position with all the 49ers' offseason acquisitions. Swain also only has eight catches in 27 career games, but did catch six for 63 yards this preseason, which should help his cause on the open market.

The 49ers are now left with Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams, Ted Ginn Jr. and 2012 first round pick A.J. Jenkins as the locks to make the roster at wide receiver. Nathan Palmer and Chris Owusu have done some good things this preseason but they'll likely be stashed on the practice squad with San Francisco's incredible depth.
