The San Francisco 49ers have a rich football history, and there are thousands and thousands of fans living in the Bay Area. Given their recent success under Jim Harbaugh and many projecting the team to maybe even win a Super Bowl next season, their fan support is at an all-time high for the last decade or so.
ESPN recently surveyed thousands of football fans across the country to discover which teams had the most dedicated supporters. Not necessarily the number of total fans, but those who identified a certain team as their favorite. We have the numbers after the jump.
Here are the numbers from ESPN.
Of the 89.3% of the fans surveyed that identified a favorite team, 4% picked the 49ers as their top team. That number was best among NFC West teams, ahead of the Seahawks (1.6%), Cardinals (0.8%) and Rams (0.7%).
The Cowboys were at the top of the list, followed by the Packers, Giants, Steelers and Patriots. The least popular team in the NFL? The Jacksonville Jaguars, who got a meager 0.4% of the vote.
These rankings don't mean a whole lot, but they are kind of fun to look at.
