2012 NFL Draft: With Their Final Pick, 49ers Draft DE Cam Johnson

With the 237th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Virginia Cavaliers defensive end Cam Johnson. It isn't clear where Johnson will fit in San Francisco's 3-4 defensive scheme; Johnson played his two most recent seasons in a 4-3 scheme as a defensive end, prior to that he was a linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

Johnson moves well for his 6'3" 268lb size. He is quick off the line and brings a strong rush to the passer, but there are questions about his motivation and effort, especially when facing double teams. He uses his hands well and is capable of defending the run and the pass. That inconsistent effort may have really hurt him, as Johnson was projected significantly higher than the 30th pick of the seventh round. It's possible San Francisco got a great value in Johnson, a young player with a lot of strength and coachable issues.
