2012 NFL Draft Results: 49ers Select Trenton Robinson At No. 180

With the No. 180 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected safety Trenton Robinson out of Michigan State. They acquired this pick from the Carolina Panthers, along with a 2013 third, so Carolina could take No. 103 in the third round. That No. 103 pick came from the Dolphins, who traded into San Francisco's spot at No. 97 to draft running back Lamar Miller.

Robinson fills a need for the 49ers - as the team doesn't have a real backup at safety. Dashon Goldson is the starter at free safety, while Donte Whitner is starting opposite. After him, there's C.J. Spillman and Colin Jones, but neither of them are actually safeties - both are special teams aces, while Spillman does occasionally see the field on defense in goal line situations.

It will be interesting to see if the 49ers think Robinson can eventually be the starter, perhaps replacing Goldson, who is playing the 2012 season on a franchise tag.

San Francisco didn't have have a third round pick, electing to trade out of it when the Indianapolis Colts wanted to trade back in, acquiring this No. 97 overall pick as well as a fifth round pick in 2013. Previously, the 49ers had selected A.J. Jenkins, a wide receiver out of Illinois and LaMichael James, a running back out of Oregon.
