With the No. 30 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected wide receiver A.J. Jenkins from Illinois.
Many wondered ... who the hell is A.J. Jenkins? He's a strong receiver, with great speed and active hands. He fights for the ball, and that's one of his best traits. His route running is a little bit raw at this point, but he's not going to need to produce right away. The 49ers signed Mario Manningham and Randy Moss in the offseason, and Michael Crabtree is in town, so Jenkins will have some time to learn.
We'll have some more analysis on the pick a bit later, but National Football Post echoes the sentiments:
Impression: Has a nice feel for the game, plucks the football well and has the speed to run away from defenders. Is a developing route runner who looks a bit limited in that area, but in the right offense he should be able to create as a reserve down the field.
49ers fans briefly flirted with the hopes of getting Stanford guard David DeCastro to fill the vacant right guard position, but he went at No. 24 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. There was also a scare when the Minnesota Vikings jumped up ahead of the 49ers, dealing with the Baltimore Ravens to pick at No. 29 - they went with safety Harrison Smith.
