49ers New Stadium Groundbreaking Set For April 19, According To Reports

If there was ever any doubt in your mind in regards to a new football stadium for the San Francisco 49ers, it may now be time to head to Candlestick Park to say your last goodbyes for real. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area is reporting that the new stadium is now go, with a date of April 19 scheduled for groundbreaking.

It's a huge deal, and validates everything we've heard thus far. We've heard 2014 and 2015 as potential years for the new stadium to open, and until now, they've seemed like intangible figures, thrown up while there's still a ton to figure out in regards to said stadium. Now it's the former, 2014, that looks the most likely, giving Candlestick Park two more years of operation before the 49ers pack it all up and move to Santa Clara.

Of course, they'll still be the San Francisco 49ers. The groundbreaking should be a momentous occasion, and the San Jose Mercury News is reporting that the event will be open to the public. There's no details yet on what exactly the event will entail, but the team and city are expected to release details soon.
