The San Francisco 49ers have cut cornerback Phillip Adams, according to Matt Maiocco. The 23-year-old product from South Carolina State University spent his first NFL season with the 49ers last season and will have to find a new team.
Adams was selected in the seventh round with the 224th overall pick by the 49ers in the 2010 NFL Draft. He played in 15 games last season but did start any of them. Over that span, Adams recorded 13 tackles and one pass deflection.
Adams played with an injured ankle last season, which limited his performance but was not seriously enough to place him on the PUP list. The 49ers' decision could have to do with health concerns.
Adams sent out a single-word tweet earlier today that merely read, "Blessed!" Many thought that this tweet confirmed that he had survived roster cuts and would stay on with the 49ers this season, but it may in fact have been his reaction to the idea of parting ways with the 49ers organization.
The 49ers will continue to tweak their roster as the 2011 NFL season draws closer.
