Michael Vick got battered and bruised by the New York Giants on Sunday, and eventually left the game with a broken right hand (non-throwing hand). Early reports from Howard Eskin of NBC 10 in Philadelphia indicate that Vick will be out 3-4 weeks. Even if that prognosis isn't totally correct, this likely means that there'll be no Vick against the San Francisco 49ers.
While you never want to wish injury on a fellow player, it's clear that this could be a fortuitous break (no pun intended) for a team as offensively moribund as the 49ers. No way Alex Smith and the stagnant Niners offense is ready to go toe-to-toe with Vick in an offensive slugfest. With young Mike Kafka now likely to start for Philadelphia at quarterback, the 49ers defense should be in great shape to pressure him around and keep the game within striking distance. However, Philadelphia will be plenty motivated to rebound from their loss to the Giants, so San Francisco's offense is going to have to make plays, Vick or no Vick.
