NFL Free Agency Rumors: Could The San Francisco 49ers Have Interest In Antonio Cromartie?

Matt Maiocco dropped an intriguing morsel of information on his twitter account last night when he had this to say:

"It should be noted Jets UFA cornerback Antonio Cromartie is represented by the same agency (CAA) as Asomugha -- 49ers have been in touch."

Now, Maiocco isn't necessarily saying that the 49ers have made an offer or even have interest - but he is pointing out that the 49ers have been in contact with Cromartie's representation during their brief courtship of Nnamdi Asomugha. What he's alluding to is the possibility that this contact could spur talks about the Jet free agent now that Asomugha is off the market.

Nate Clements has been released. Nnamdi Asomugha has been signed by the Eagles. What's next for the 49ers? As Mike Sando framed the situation:

The 49ers' defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, previously sought to build the Texans' defense around a pass-rusher (Jason Babin) and a cornerback (Dunta Robinson). Fangio's current team used the seventh overall choice for outside linebacker Aldon Smith, who reached agreement on a contract Thursday. Will the 49ers get a top-tier cornerback for him this offseason?

Just something to keep an eye on.
