Although the San Francisco 49ers reportedly pulled out of the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes several hours before the decision came down, 49ers fans were hoping against hope that he would still end up back in the Bay Area. That ended up not being the case as the Philadelphia Eagles came out of nowhere to land the mega-free agent.
Now the 49ers find themselves wondering what to do at the cornerback position. They released Nate Clements when they couldn’t work out a new deal and now are in the market for some secondary help. The main names in free agency are Antonio Cromartie, Chris Carr, Carlos Rogers and Richard Marshall. Brent Grimes and Brandon Carr are restricted free agents. Now that Philadelphia has added Nnamdi they might also look to trade or cut Asante Samuel. Maybe San Francisco’s a landing spot?
For now, the 49ers remain silent on day one of free agency as they plot their next move. They have cap space with which to work and holes in their depth chart to fill.
