After months of speculation and rumor, the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with quarterback Alex Smith according to ESPN's John Clayton. It marks the first major agreement the Niners have made since the lifting of the lockout.
Smith agreed to a one year deal reportedly for about $5 million, and will be the hands down favorite to be the Niners starting quarterback, barring any other trades at that position. Smith was a free agent after the 2010 season, but with the lockout and the frenzy that surrounded it both the Niners and Smith felt it best to tough it out for one more year to see if Smith can reach the potential he was supposed to have as the number one overall pick in 2005.
Smith had been running off-season workouts with 49ers players during the lockout, and was dubbed 'Camp Alex' by many as he took the reigns and ran all of the offensive workouts without the help of any coaches. The Niners second round draft pick, QB Colin Kapernick, is looking to be the heir apparent as the signal caller of the team, but will have to wait a little longer now that Smith is sticking around.
