Following in the footsteps of Notre Dame nose tackle Ian Williams, Cal offensive lineman Donovan Edwards tweeted confirmation that he'll be heading to Santa Clara on Tuesday to sign on with the San Francisco 49ers. Edwards will find himself battling with the likes of Daniel Kilgore, Michael Person and Chase Beeler among others for playing time. Even beyond that Edwards will be battling for a roster spot more than anything else.
Edwards played almost exclusively at right tackle for the Golden Bears and was a popular player, as well as fairly prolific tweeter. According to a source with California Golden Blogs who watched plenty of the Bears offensive line, Edwards lacked the footspeed to be a sure defender against edge rushers. Edwards worked out for both the 49ers and Raiders at center, which indicates the team could very well move inside to guard or center.
