Draft day is here, and mock drafts are pouring out in an effort to be read one last time before teams go up and make their picks. It's likely that absolutely nothing comes from most of this, mock drafts don't account for so many things, but they are entertaining reads and the only thing to sustain a great number of us throughout this long and arduous offseason. Well, ESPN's Todd McShay has just released his seven-round mock draft, so now we're going to see how the 49ers stacked up in it.
First round, No. 7 (7th overall): Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
Second round, No. 13 (45th overall): Jabaal Sheard, OLB, Pitt
Third round, No. 12 (76th overall): Joshua Thomas, CB, Buffalo
Fourth round, No. 11 (108th overall): Shane Vereen, RB, Cal
Fourth round, No. 18 (115th overall): Dwayne Harris, WR, East Carolina
Fifth round, No. 10 (141st overall): Jeron Johnson, S, Boise State
Sixth round, No. 9 (174th overall): Owen Marecic, FB, Stanford
Sixth round, No. 25 (190th overall): Jerrell Powe, NT, Mississippi
Seventh round, No. 8 (211th overall): Garrett Chisolm, OG, South Carolina
Seventh round, No. 28 (231st overall): Derrell Smith, OLB, Syracuse
Seventh round, No. 36 (239th overall): Alex Wujciak, ILB, Maryland
Seventh round, No. 47 (250th overall): Kris Durham, WR, Georgia
Overall, I'd give this draft somewhere in the range of a C- all the way to a B- because there are some solid late round picks, but the beginning of the draft doesn't necessarily shape up. McShay has the 49ers selecting a corner in the third who projects as a sixth round pick, ahead of some very solid guys like Curtis Brown, Davon House and Brandon Burton. It really doesn't make sense, and the consensus also seems to be that the 49ers aren't terribly interested in Gabbert at seven, but that's not a big knock, it's just not the likliest of scenarios.
They get good value in Marecic in round six and even better value in Powe directly after him. Vereen is also a huge talent for the fourth round, so the 49ers are doing well in that regard. It's not a bad draft by any means, but it's one that doesn't necessarily line up well and make sense for the 49ers on all fronts.
