Josh McDaniels Fired; 49ers Could Have Some Competition

New, 3 comments

Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen announced today that head coach Josh McDaniels has been fired in this his second season running the team. It's been a rough go for McDaniels who was 8-8 last season and 3-9 thus far in 2010. The record was tough enough, but when you add in the Spygate 2 scandal, it had to make it easier to make this call. McDaniels was fined for failing to report it but was cleared of utilizing the footage for his gain. However, given the fact that this was the second incident involving the person who taped the 49ers practice, it had to go towards McDaniels' decision-making ability.

This decision adds yet another job to the slowly increasing number of head coaching vacancies around the NFL. The 49ers do not have such a vacancy at this point but given how the 2010 season has gone for the 49ers, it should not be the least bit surprising if the 49ers decide to part ways with Mike Singletary after this season. If that's the case, 49ers ownership would have one more competitor for the various big name head coaches that will be out there in January.
