The Stanford Cardinal are ranked No. 14 in the latest BCS standings released on Sunday.

Following a 24-17 home win against the Washington State Cougars in Palo Alto, the Stanford Cardinal are ranked No. 14 in the 2012 BCS Standings released on Sunday.

Previously ranked 17th, the Cardinal jumped three spots ahead of Mississippi State, Texas A&M and USC.

The Trojans fell eight spots after being ranked ninth a week ago. They took a disappointing loss to Arizona in Tuscon that helped contribute to making Stanford the third ranked Pac-12 team in the BCS standings behind Oregon and Oregon State.

There's been plenty of reaction over at SB Nation's own Stanford blog, Rule of Tree. A quick look at the front page will reveal that Cardinal fans are relieved that Stanford avoided a major upset against the Cougars that would have cost significant ranking points.

Though the win wasn't pretty, the team still emerges from the contest with a 6-2 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the Pac-12 conference and is poised to play in the championship game.

Stanford is now tied with Oregon State for second place in the Pac-12 North after the Beavers slipped up this past Saturday.

Assisted by Washington's upset over Oregon State, the Stanford Cardinal moved into a tie for second place in the Pac-12 North this past weekend.

Stanford racked up 10 sacks in their 24-17 win over Washington State Saturday as they moved to 4-1 in the conference. Only the undefeated Oregon Ducks remain superior to Stanford, whose Pac-12 record is better than anyone in the South division.

Stanford has another easy one next week against Colorado before getting their chance to move to the top of the North when they face Oregon State and Oregon in back-to-back weeks.

As for the Cal, the Golden Bears continue to tumble down the standings, losing their second straight game, this time to Utah, for their fourth conference loss of 2012. They'll be playing host to the Huskies next week as they look to stop the skid.

The Stanford Cardinal squeaked out a 24-17 victory over the Washington State Cougars on Saturday, improving to 6-2 (4-1) on the season.

The Cardinal and Cougars were tied at 10 at halftime, but Stanford was able to score two more touchdowns and held the Cougars out of the endzone in the game's final seconds.

Quarterback Josh Nunes struggled again, throwing for 136 yards and a touchdown on just 7-15 passing. Rule of Tree blogger Scott Allen weighed in on Stanford's passing issues following the game:

Despite the shaky quarterback play, the Cardinal improved to the No. 15 spot in the AP and USA Today Coaches Polls after the win. Next Saturday, Nov. 3, Stanford will take on the Colorado Buffaloes. The Buffaloes are 1-7 and were blown out by the Oregon Ducks over the weekend, 70-14.

The No. 17 Stanford Cardinal survived a scare from the Washington State Cougars, taking a 24-17 victory on a defensive touchdown.

Up 17-10 in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal got the cushion they needed when safety Ed Reynolds stepped in front of a Jeff Tuel pass and returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown and a 24-10 lead.

Washington State staged a comeback, however, first when Tuel capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kristoff Williams. The Cougars got the ball one final time, and drove all the way to the Stanford 9-yard line with under a minute to play.

The game-tying drive ended when Tuel was forced into an intentional grounding (which comes with a ten-second runoff), then sacked. Washington State had no timeouts, and time expired.

The defensive score was huge for Stanford and its struggling offense. Washington State outgained the Cardinal, 385-256.

Box Score Hero: Wide receiver Jamal-Rashad Patterson, Stanford. Patterson caught only one pass for the Cardinal, but it was for a 70-yard touchdown. The big play helped the limping Stanford offense do just enough for the win.

Rankings Ramifications: While the win was underwhelming, three teams directly ahead of Stanford lost, so the Cardinal may move up a slot or two anyway.

But Did They Cover? Stanford was a 25-point favorite, and did not cover.

The Stanford Cardinal have taken a 17-10 lead over the Washington State Cougars after three quarters of play at Stanford Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Cardinal opened the second half with a deliberate scoring drive, going 78 yards on 13 plays, capped when Ryan Hewitt scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run.
The two completions for 43 yards on the drive were good for Nunes, who is otherwise 6-14 for 129 yards on the day.
The No. 17 Stanford Cardinal takes on the Washington State Cougars on Saturday, and Stanford fans would be forgiven for not being sure exactly which team is going to show up. Stanford's offense has been fairly inconsistent in 2012, scoring 50 or more points in two of their wins, but struggling to get to 21 points in three other victories. Neither loss the team has posted exceeded 13 points.

SB Nation's Stanford blog Rule of Tree has a detailed breakdown of what's gone on with the offense, splitting things into the good, the awful, and the wierdly inefficient.

They mark six yards per play as the point the Cardinal needs to hit. They're 4-0 when they do so, and 1-2 when they don't. (The sole win being the 20-17 season-opener over the San Jose State Spartans.) Rule of Tree calls back to the 2009 Stanford vs. USC game, and highlights the way the running game closed things off:

This was pretty much the end of each game: the offensive line creating huge holes against tired defensive linemen, with Stepfan Taylor darting through to burn clock. At the time, the clock was more important than the score, and the offense accomplished that goal. (On the other hand, given the pillage the Stanford OL inflicted on each team, not scoring the dagger is a disappointment.)

So what happened? Those two performances suggest that the offense can be pretty functional against good-to-reasonably-good opposing defenses. Well, inefficiency: Jordan Williamson missed two eminently makeable field goals; the offense couldn't convert red zone opportunities; the offense had too many turnovers.

Rule of Tree concludes that switching out Josh Nunes isn't likely to help the offense. The junior has a 53-percent completion percentage on the season, for 1,484 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. The difference is likely to come down to execution: fewer penalties, fewer dropped balls. The full post contains a lot more, so don't miss it.

Here's all you need to know for Stanford's Saturday game against Washington State.

No. 17 ranked Stanford will play host to Washington State this Saturday at 3:15 p.m. ET as they look to build on their BCS resume with their fifth straight victory over the Cougars.

Stanford has won their last four games over WSU by an average margin of 31 points. Not helping the matter is the face that Washington State has lost four straight games this year.

This will be Mike Leach's first career game against Stanford but he lost his only other matchup against a California school this season when the Cal Golden Bears handed the Cougars a 31-17 defeat.

Washington State has had a week off to recover since that time but unless they found a way to fix the 175.1 rushing yards per game they've been allowing this season, they're going to be in for a long afternoon. Stanford has averaged 167.6 yards per game on the ground in 2012 with the physical Stepfan Taylor leading the way (846 rushing yards, six touchdowns).

Here's all you need to know for Saturday's game:

The Stanford Cardinal are huge favorites to beat the Washington State Cougars this weekend.

The Stanford Cardinal look to keep their season moving forward when they face off with the Washington State Cougars, and Vegas likes their chances to win this week. Stanford opened as 21 point favorites over WSU, and that line has moved up since then to 24.5 to 25 points, depending on which sportsbook you look at.

Stanford has used their dominant defense to win most of their football games this season. The Cardinal edged San Jose State opening week, obliterated Duke, upset USC, won a shootout with Arizona, and knocked out Cal in the Big Game. They have lost two games because of their lack of offense though, falling to Notre Dame and Washington because they couldn't score touchdowns.

Washington State is winless in the Pac-12. The Cougars have won games against UNLV and Eastern Washington, but have dropped the rest of their games to BYU, Oregon State, Oregon, Colorado and Cal.
