Both the Cal Golden Bears and the Arizona State Sun Devils managed to escape from Saturday's game relatively injury free.

The Cal Golden Bears fell to 1-4 on Saturday after losing to the Arizona State Sun Devils, 27-17.

But if there's one positive to be taken from the game, it's that neither team sustained any major injuries before the fourth quarter came to a close. The Bears will next take on the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, Oct. 6, with a relatively clean bill of health.

Even still, Cal fans aren't happy following a third straight defeat by the Golden Bears. It's Cal's worst start since the 2001 season and has head coach Jeff Tedford firmly on the hot seat. His team was booed off the field following the loss.

Cal recovered from an early 7-0 first quarter deficit to tie things up early in the second. ASU put up 13 unanswered points, but the Golden Bears fought back to pull within 20-17 in the fourth quarter. A Kevin Ozier touchdown pass midway through the final quarter was enough to put the game out of reach for the Golden Bears.

California Golden Blogs analyzes Cal's recent loss to Arizona State and provides insight into the rest of Cal's season.

On Saturday, California Golden Blogs noticed a change in the dynamic of the Cal-Arizona State football game held at Memorial Stadium. After winning eight of the last nine meetings against the Sun Devils and feasting on what seemed to always be a litany of mistakes committed by those ASU teams, the Bears found themselves doing the same thing that the Sun Devils did in their losses -- committing mistakes. Arizona State led for nearly the entire game, winning 27-17 on Saturday.

Cal was called for 12 penalties for an eye-opening 119 yards compared to a Sun Devils team that did not turn the ball over and committed only two penalties. The mistakes aided the first ASU win over Cal since 2007 and ASU's first win in Berkeley since 1997.

CGB described the Sun Devils as being more physical than Cal throughout the game. It was evident in the six sacks of Cal quarterback Zach Maynard, including four in the first quarter alone.

CFB questioned the offensive line and the Bears inability to get the ball to Brendan Bigelow, frankly stating: "This is not a good football team. At all."

After a 1-4 start to the 2012 season, California's Jeff Tedford is beginning to feel the heat from fans.

A 27-17 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils has started the hot seat chatter for California Golden Bears coach Jeff Tedford, who leads a 1-4 California team as the calendar turns to October.

Tedford, who is 80-52 since beginning his his tenure as California's coach in 2002, has seen a sub-.500 record since 2009 break the support he had enjoyed from the California faithful in recent years.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Bruce Jenkins talked to some of those Golden Bear fans before Saturday's game, and they seemed on edge about Tedford's future.

"I'm the last one off the bus when it comes to (firing) Tedford," a tailgating fan told Jenkins. "But we have to move on. ... If this doesn't turn around, I really think they'll buy him out. I'm predicting that if we finish under .500, he's gone."

At 1-4 and tough showdowns with the Stanford Cardinal, Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers to go among their remaining seven games, Tedford has an uphill battle to fight.

Cal lost its third straight game on Saturday to Arizona State and are off to its worst start since 2001.

This is unfamiliar territory for the California Golden Bears under head coach Jeff Tedford. After losing to Arizona State, 27-17, on Saturday, the Bears are in the midst of their worst start ever under Tedford.

Tedford took over for former head coach Tom Holmoe in 2002 after Holmoe and Cal lost their first 10 games of 2001.

Tedford got off to a strong start during his tenure but it has steadily gotten worse over the years. Since 2009, Tedford has a losing record and with the team's only win this season against Southern Utah, the fans at Cal are already noticing that this is going to be a long season.

Cal was penalized a whopping 12 times for a total of 119 yards which can almost always be attributed to discipline and coaching.

The Golden Bears gave up six sacks and quarterback Zach Maynard finished a paltry 9 for 28 for 126 yards and a touchdown.

The Arizona State Sun Devils took care of the California Golden Bears on Saturday, winning 27-17 on a sunny Berkeley afternoon.

The Sun Devils moved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 Conference with the win. After building a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter, Arizona State saw Cal bring the game within 3. Cal quarterback Zach Maynard hit Keenan Allen on a 10-yard touchdown pass with nine minutes left to play.

But the Sun Devils answered back with a quick scoring drive just three minutes later, as Taylor Kelly found Kevin Ozier for a 22-yard touchdown pass and a 27-17 lead.

The Bears committed a whopping 12 penalties for 119 yards, while Maynard completed just 9-28 passes in the loss that dropped them to 1-4.

Box Score Hero: QB Taylor Kelly, Arizona State. Kelly threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns while avoiding any interceptions.

Rankings Ramifications: Arizona State was receiving some votes last week, so the win will likely have them creep closer to the top 25.

But Did They Cover? The Sun Devils were favored by 2.5 points and did cover.

Next Week's Schedule: Arizona State will take a week off, while Cal prepares to host UCLA.

The Cal Golden Bears continue to trail the ASU Sun Devils after three quarters, 20-10. Cal's offense struggled almost the entire first half and proved unable to use the half to reset and turn things around. They did manage a field goal in the closing minutes of the third quarter, but it remains to be seen if they can generate any momentum in the fourth.

Zach Maynard is just 7-for-18 through three quarters, collecting only 102 yards. Isi Sofele is having a better day, picking up 105 yards on 15 carries with Cal's only touchdown, but he also has Cal's only fumble. Keenan Allen is the leading Golden Bears receiver, with three catches for 69 yards.

As they have the entire game, the Golden Bears' defense is doing their best to keep Cal in contention. They've twice stiffened up to force ASU to settle for field goals, one of which was missed. If Cal can't find a way to keep things going on offense, though, they may quickly find themselves 1-4.

The Cal State Golden Bears trail the ASU Sun Devils at halftime, 17-7. Cal's offense has struggled in the face of pressure from ASU's defensive line, both failing to move the ball and Isi Sofele coughing up a fumble late in the half.

Cal managed less than 150 yards of offense in the half, with Zach Maynard going 3-for-8 while throwing for 63 yards, and Sofele adding 89 yards on 12 carries. The Golden Bears' only score came on a three-play, 76-yard drive for a touchdown that featured a 44-yard pass to Keenan Allen and a 24-yard touchdown rush by Sofele. The seven drives other than that one have resulted in five punts, a fumble and the end of the half.

Cal is also having a problem with penalties, collecting seven flags for 68 yards. ASU has been called for only one penalty for five yards.

The Golden Bears' defense is doing its best to keep Cal in the game. Midway through the second quarter they stopped ASU in the red zone to force a field goal, but after Sofele's fumble the defense was unable to stop ASU from putting up another touchdown.

The game isn't yet out of hand for Cal, but they'll need to regroup at the half and eliminate the preventable mistakes in the second half.

The California Golden Bears trail the ASU Sun Devils, 7-0, after one quarter of action. The Cal offense has struggled to get started, with quarterback Zach Maynard going just 1-for-3 for 11 yards in the quarter.

Running back Isi Sofele has pitched in to carry the offense, but he's only mustered 48 yards on eight carries. Cal had three drives in the first quarter, only one of which went more than 10 yards and all three of which resulted in a punt.

Cal's defense is doing better, forcing a punt on two out of Arizona State's firs three drives. The third drive, however, went 67 yards on nine plays for a touchdown. Cal entered the game against the Sun Devils as very slight underdogs,. If they can keep things close they have a very good shot at the win, but that will mean getting the offense started in the second quarter.
