The Oakland Raiders decided that covering against the Pittsburgh Steelers wasn't enough. They decided to win the football game too by a final score of 34-31. And for once it was the Raiders defense getting the best of the Steelers.

Pittsburgh came into the weekend favored from 3.5 to 4.5 points depending on where you looked, and they looked like a solid bet based on the way the Raiders had played during the season. But Oakland's defense played opportunistic and forced some crucial turnovers that stopped Pittsburgh drives and set up much needed Oregon scores. They got some crucial drives from Carson Palmer in the 4th quarter. Darren McFadden and the Oakland running game got set up early. And it was Sebastian Janikowski kicking two game-tying and game-winning field goals in the fourth quarter to set up the victory.

So the Raiders covered on Sunday in the Coliseum. But they also took the money line straight up too.

Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen downplayed his first victory as an NFL head coach, 34-31 over the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum, and maybe that's exactly what this franchise should be about.

That's the opinion of San Jose Mercury News columnist Tim Kawakami, who has an interesting past with previous Raiders regimes. Kawakami writes:

This is the new way things are going to go for the Raiders - through ups and downs-and everybody is getting used to it.

Which is easier to do for those involved when there's a victory involved, of course.

Allen seems to be all about team first. It's an attitude his players have noticed. Quarterback Carson Palmer said Allen doesn't have en ego. And although Allen acknowledged that a first victory for himself is meaningful, it seems that he celebrated by going right back to work Monday and breaking down the Raiders' next opponent.

The Raiders are 1-2 and Allen had to be happy about what he saw from his team in the second half, when Oakland rallied from a 10-point deficit early in the fourth quarter.

Heyward-Bey was injured early in the fourth quarter of the Raiders' 34-31 win. He ran a route to the end zone and suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit from Steelers safety Ryan Mundy. Heyward-Bey crumpled to the turf and was motionless for several minutes. He had to be taken off on a stretcher but gave a thumbs up as he was leaving the stadium.

Later in the game, Mundy was involved in a helmet-to-helmet collision with Raiders tight end Brandon Myers. Myers was diagnosed with a concussion on the sideline. Mundy was not penalized for either hit.

Going into Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Darren McFadden was in need of a good day. In the first two games of the season, McFadden totaled just 54 rushing yards on 26 carries, not the kind of numbers a team is looking to see from its starting running back. McFadden had his good day in Oakland's 34-31 win.

The fifth-year veteran out of Arkansas carried the ball 18 times and picked up 113 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. It was McFadden's first 100-yard game since Sept. 25, 2011, against the New York Jets. McFadden's solid performance helped the Raiders earn their first win of 2012.

Even though McFadden was saying all the right things before the game, he was likely beginning to feel some pressure to provide more production. Sunday's game relieved that pressure:

"It feels good. Like a weight off your shoulders. I feel good about that. We just want to go out there, keep working hard and keep getting better each week.

"We always tell ourselves, you just have to keep hitting it, you're going to get one yard here, two yards there, eventually you're going to break the big ones, and today we were doing that."

The Raiders will look to get back to .500 at the Denver Broncos in Week 4. The game is set to kick off 4:05 p.m. ET and will be televised by CBS.

Sunday's Oakland-Pittsburgh game, a 34-31 victory by the Raiders, wasn't without its share of significant injuries. The Raiders lost wide reciever Darrius Heyward-Bey and tight end Brandon Myers to concussions late in the game.

Heyward-Bey's injury was the scarier of the two. He suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit from Steelers safety Ryan Mundy early in the fourth quarter. Heyward-Bey fell unconsious in the end zone and was motionless for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. He gave a thumbs up on his way out of the stadium and was taken to an area hospital.

On Oakland's final drive, Myers caught a 15-yard pass for a first down and became the second victim of a Mundy helmet-to-helmet hit. Myers walked off the field and was diagnosed with a concussion on the sideline.

Both players will have to undergo extensive testing before being cleared to play in Week 4 against Denver. Mundy was not flagged for either hit.

The Oakland Raiders might not end up having a great season, but they will be able to look back on Sept. 23, 2012 with fondness given the way they defeated the Pittsburgh Steeler on Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum.

Here's how Silver and Black Pride's Levi Damien reacted to the victory for the Raider Nation:

The first time they led in this game was the kick (Sebastian) Janikowski made to win the game as time expired. Simply incredible after what we saw from this team through the first two weeks.

So SeaBass's kick sent the Raiders to victory and a 1-2 record. As bad as Oakland looked in the first two weeks of the season, what a difference any given Sunday can make. And what a difference a long run and productive day from running back Darren McFadden can make. The Raiders were down 31-21 in the fourth quarter.

And how about this, no Raiders penalties in the first half!

The only bad news could be the status of wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, who was carted off after a hard hit that knocked him out. He is reportedly in the hospital overnight Sunday.

The Oakland Raiders were down by 10 points when the fourth quarter started, and despite losing wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey to a scary head injury in the final period, they came back to beat the PIttsburgh Steelers, 34-31, on a 43-yard field goal as time expired by Sebastian Janikowski.

Ben Roethlisberger was heroic in defeat, commanding the Steeler offense despite a complete lack of a running game, throwing four touchdowns in the first three quarters. He didn't turn the ball over despite throwing 49 times, but the Raiders — led by Carson Palmer, who was throwing darts in the second half — were too much for a depleted Steelers defense that was without Troy Polamalu and James Harrison.

Carson Palmer finished with 233 yards passing and three touchdowns, managing the comeback stupendously, including engineering the Raiders' final drive, putting Janikowski well within range to knock through the winning kick. The Raiders got their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, making rookie head coach Dennis Allen's seat just a little cooler. The Steelers fell to 1-2, and they can't wait to get Polamalu, Harrison and Rashard Mendenhall, especially, back.

Fantasy Stud: Roethlisberger, of course, who finished with a line of 384 yards, four touchdowns and threw in eight rushing yards to go along with it. The cherry on top? No turnovers. Honorable mentions: Carson Palmer (three touchdowns), Darren McFadden (112 yards, one TD), Heath Miller (two TDs) and Mike Wallace (eight receptions, 118 yards, one TD).

Fantasy Dud: Steelers running backs. If you've listened to the guys at SB Nation Fantasy, then you avoided Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer and Chris Rainey. If not, you got no touchdowns, no back with more than 50 total yards, and Dwyer lost a fumble.

Gamblin': The Steelers were four-point favorites going into the game, so they obviously didn't cover.

injuries: The most significant injury of the game was Darrius Heyward-Bey, who took an absolutely vicious hit to the head from safety Ryan Mundy in the end zone. Heyward-Bey was moving his extremities and gave a thumbs-up to the crowd, so the absolute worst fears after an injury like that don't appear to be realized. Still, it was a scary moment, and it would be surprising to see DHB back on the field next week.

What's Next: The Steelers have a bye next week, after which they'll face the Eagles at home. The Raiders will go on the road against their division rival, the Denver Broncos, in Week 4.

Darrius Heyward-Bey took a facemask to the helmet from Ryan Mundy, and looked to go limp immediately as he flew several yards through the air before hitting the turf.

Medical staff were being very cautious, leaving him on the turf for the better part of ten minutes while they stabilized his neck, and just removed him from the field on a back board. It's too early to speculate on the severity of the injury, though given the cautiousness of the staff it doesn't look good. However, he just gave a thumbs up to the crowd in Oakland, and appears to be moving which is a wonderful sign. Leading up to this point he was having a solid game, catching a touchdown early to keep the game in Oakland's reach.

According to Steve Corkan of the Contra Costa Times, Heyward-Bey was taken to a local hospital via ambulance for examination, and observation.
