The California Golden Bears suffered a loss to the No. 12 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon, but the Golden Bears faithful weren't too displeased that their team dropped the seven-point decision. It should continue getting better, too, considering the Golden Bears shouldn't have to worry about injuries stemming from this weekend's road trip.

Neither team suffered any noticeable injuries on Saturday afternoon, meaning Cal only has to worry about injuries they've already been dealing with -- particularly tight end Richard Rodgers, offensive lineman Matt Summers-Gavin and linebacker Khairi Fortt, all of which missed Saturday's game but could return next week against the USC Trojans.

As far as Ohio State is concerned, they were without a pair of running backs on Saturday as Adam Homan and Carlos Hyde both watched from the sidelines whereas defensive lineman Michael Bennett also was inactive. The Buckeyes didn't report any new injuries, however, which bodes well for their future as well.

The California Golden Bears suffered a seven-point defeat at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon, but Cal wasn't expected to win the game anyway -- especially on the road. That said, the loss was expected but not necessarily disappointing for the Golden Bears' fans.

Cal has slowly but surely been showing more promise and the fans have taken notice of it -- particularly our friends over at California Golden Blogs. Avinash Kunnath wrote in his recap that the Golden Bears are showing improvement and, despite the loss, Saturday's game was pretty positive otherwise.

College football is a funny thing when you overachieve and come up short. You sort of feel mad that you didn't grab the win, you're kind of irritated at the questionable decisions, but in the end you brush it off and move on because things look better today than they did yesterday. I'm really more encouraged that we can get back to bowl eligibility than I was last week, and feel real better about out future considering how many youngsters are contributing and producing already.

The Golden Bears are going to have to string together victories in order to really show their improving, but it's quite promising that Cal fans are noticing that their football team is getting better at doing the little things.

The California Golden Bears fell just short, losing 35-28, in their upset bid on the road at Ohio State Saturday. A frantic fourth quarter, which saw four total touchdowns, was capped by a 72-yard touchdown pass from Ohio State's Braxton Miller to Devin Smith with 3:26 to play. The touchdown proved to be the decisive, as Cal turned the ball over on their final drive.

Ohio State led 20-7 at the half, as Cal had struggled to combat an onslaught of penalites, including one that brought back a touchdown that would have made the score 20-14 in the second quarter.

The Bears fought back in the second half, closing to 20-14 on an excellent 81-yard touchdown run by Brendan Bigelow. They would go on to take the lead at 21-20 lead after an 8-play, 46-yard drive ended with a 1-yard run by quarterback Zach Maynard.

The fourth quarter became hectic from there. Ohio State immediately answered with a 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by 3-yard touchdown pass from Miller to Jake Stoneburner. A two-point conversion put OSU up 28-21 with 8:31 to play.

It took two plays and 21 second for the Bears to tie the game. Bigelow got loose on another long touchdown run, this time for 59 yards, and the game was tied at 28-28.

Cal was given a golden opportunity to take the lead when Miller threw an interception on the next drive. Head coach Jeff Tedford faced a decision at 4th-and-1 from the Ohio State 25, and chose to kick a field goal. Vincenzo D'Amato missed his third try of the game and the score remained tied with just over four minutes to play.

That proved to be Cal's last chance at a lead, as the Buckeyes went on top less than a minute later to secure the victory.

The California Golden Bears are hanging tough against the Ohio St. Buckeyes, trailing by a score of 20-14 after three quarters of play. It appears the Buckeyes were ready to blow the game wide open when leading 20-7 at half, but Cal's defense really stepped up in the third quarter to keep the deficit manageable.

An 81-yard touchdown rush from Brendan Bigelow was the lone score of the quarter. The Bears had a chance to convert a 42-yard field goal late, but it went wide left.

Zach Maynard has played very well thus far, completing 21 of his 29 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown. Isi Sofele has rushed for 68 yards on 17 attempts. Keenan Allen leads the California receivers with eight receptions and 76 yards.

Braxton Miller has been great for Ohio State, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another. The sophomore quarterback is 11-for-21 with 134 passing yards, as well as 58 rushing yards on eight attempts.

The fourth quarter is about to begin on ABC.

The California Golden Bears had a chance to make a statement on the road in Columbus on Saturday morning, but the first half of play was hardly the start they were hoping for. After two quarters of play, the Ohio St. Buckeyes lead the Bears by a score of 20-7.

Braxton Miller has been the story of the game. The sophomore quarterback has picked Cal's defense apart, throwing for 129 yards and rushing for 64 more. He connected on touchdown strikes to Devin Smith and Jake Stoneburner, and also broke off a 55-yard rushing touchdown for the first score of the game.

Blame it on the early start time -- kickoff came at 9 a.m. California time -- not being prepared or a couple of unfavorable penalty flags, but the Bears have not looked very good on either side of the ball. Their lone scoring drive was capped off with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Zach Maynard to Chris Harper late in the first quarter. Maynard has completed 16 of his 19 pass attempts for 147 yards, although he's been pressured all day and has rushed for -32 yards.

Isi Sofele leads the Bears with 50 rushing yards on 11 attempts. Keenan Allen is having a nice game with six receptions and 55 yards.

The Ohio St. Buckeyes have a key out-of-conference game with the California Golden Bears on Saturday morning. After a quarter of play, the Buckeyes lead 13-7.

Zach Maynard played well in the first quarter, but he has been hit hard a couple of times already. He is 7-for-9 on his pass attempts for 71 yards and a touchdown. Maynard hit Chris Harper on a bubble-screen play that went for a 19-yard score to give Cal a 7-6 lead midway through the quarter.

Braxton Miller has been the star so far. The sophomore quarterback is 5-for-8 on his pass attempts for 83 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Devin Smith late in the first quarter on a 25-yard strike for their second TD of the game. Miller also broke off a 55-yard touchdown run to give Ohio State an early 6-0 lead (after a missed PAT).

The second quarter is about to get underway. You can find the action live on ABC.

Facing the No. 12 team in the country in a stadium that holds more than 100,000 people seems like reason to get excited, but heading into their game with the Buckeyes, California is trying to maintain focus and not get over excited for Saturday's matchup.

Bears' linebacker Robert Mullins said he is keeping his focus on preparing for the Buckeyes rather than getting overly excited about the atmosphere and high profile matchup.

"Hoo-rah never got me a tackle," Mullins said, according to SFGate.com. "It never got anyone a tackle. Be excited, be very excited, but understand what's important. What's important is our consistency. It might be a little extra motivation for some guys. I'm self-motivated. It has no influence on my preparation."

Whether or not Mullins and his Cal teammates will be able to temper their enthusiasm and maintain their composure when the whistle blows remains to be seen. If the Bears are able to keep their cool against OSU, it could bode well for their future as Cal will play in a similar environment the following week when they go on the road to face No. 2 USC.

The California Golden Bears head to the great state of Ohio this weekend for what could be one of their toughest games of the year as they take on the No. 12 Ohio State Buckeyes.

An upset by the Golden Bears would certainly go a long way for cracking the top 25, but this is just a warmup for the next game against the USC Trojans. The Bears certainly could use a win against a top 25 team, having been upset by Nevada earlier in the season.
