Andy Murray of Great Britain served for the match as he captured his first Grand Slam title in a 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 5-2 defeat of Novak Djokovic on Monday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., at the 2012 U.S. Open.

The third-seeded Murray outlasted Djokovic, the second seed, and wore down the Serb with his outstanding court coverage en route to the win. It capped off a banner year for Murray following a gold medal victory at the 2012 London Olympic games.

The first set began with each competitor breaking the other's serve -- Murray would go on to win that set in a tiebreak, 7-6. It was the return game of Murray that proved to be too much for Djokovic. With the win, Murray becomes the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since 1936.

Murray managed just 31 winners to Djokovic's 40, but committed 56 unforced errors against 65 from the runner-up.

Serena Williams claimed the fourth U.S. Open championship of her career on Sunday afternoon in Flushing Meadows, defeating No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in three sets. Williams won the first set 6-2 and dropped the second 2-6. After trailing Azarenka 5-3 in the third and final set, Williams rallied behind the support of the capacity crowd and won 7-5.

Williams' serve was strong throughout most the day, although a couple of double faults did not help her chances late. Her forehand continued to be her strongest option, often hitting balls all across the back line. Azarenka did a nice job of pacing herself throughout the match and was two points away from a championship at one point, but she simply could not overcome Serena on this day.

The men's championship match is scheduled for Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET. It'll be No. 2 Novak Djokovic vs. No. 3 Andy Murray.

Andy Roddick played what will be the final match of his storied career on Wednesday, falling to No. 7 Juan Martin del Potro in four sets, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4, in the fourth round of the 2012 U.S. Open before a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

No. 20 Roddick won the first set via tiebreaker, but couldn't maintain his edge after del Potro surged to overcome the deficit in the second. The two players matched up well against one another, giving the capacity crowd a match to remember on Wednesday. Rain delays brought the match to a halt on Tuesday night.

Del Potro moves on to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 Novak Djokovic of Serbia on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
