The Oakland Atheltics were shut out on Tuesday and suffered a hard-luck loss on Tuesday at Kaufman Stadium against the Kansas City Royals. Thankfully, they were able to avoid being swept as they managed to defeat the Royals by a final score of 3-0 on Thursday.

Starting pitchers Luke Hochevar and Dan Straily both held the game scoreless until the A's finally broke through in the sixth inning, when Coco Crisp hit what was reviewed and ruled to be his sixth home run of the year. In the seventh, Yoenis Cespedes hit a solo shot of his own, his 15th of the season, to make it 2-0. Jemile Weeks tacked on a big insurance run with an RBI single in the top of the eighth.

Straily held the Royals to just three hits and two walks in 6.1 innings of work to pick up his first major league win.

As the news that Dallas Braden will have to push back his return deadline even further on Wednesday, the Oakland Athletics are looking to add another arm for insurance. Thusly, the San Francisco Chronicles' Susan Slusser is reporting that the Oakland Athletics have signed right-handed pitcher Jeremy Accardo and optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento.

The 30-year old Accardo was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians on August 4th and eventually released on August 9th. He made 26 appearances for Cleveland this season, owning a 4.58 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP with 7.1 K/9 ratio and 4.1 BB/9 ratio. Accardo owns a 4.27 lifetime ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9.

Accardo has been in and out of the majors since 2005, seeing time with the Giants, Blue Jays, Orioles and Indians.

The news for Oakland Athletics pitcher Dallas Braden has gone from bad to worse as CSN Bay Area is reporting that the A's left-hander will unfortunately undergo another shoulder surgery in the upcoming weeks.

Braden's recovery has been slow from his first shoulder surgery back on May 17, 2011 to repair a torn anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder. Skipper Bob Melvin noted that the lefty will have an exploratory surgery instead of a reconstructive one, and no date for the procedure has been set.

Braden, 29 hasn't seen major league action since April 16, 2011, though has been on a solid throwing program and seemed to return to the mound. He had been throwing bullpen sessions of up to 40 pitches, throwing all his pitches, including off-speed.

With the stiff competition coming out of the A's Triple-A team in Stockton and the status of his health long-term, Braden could have already pitched his last game in a Oakland uniform. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

The Oakland Athletics had a much-needed off day on Monday after dropping a series in Chicago. Things didn't start much better for them on Tuesday in Kaufman Stadium, however, as the A's dropped the opener by a final score of 5-0.

The Royals scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning off of Oakland starter Jarrod Parker. Eric Hosmer hit an RBI single, Chris Getz hit a sacrifice fly, Alex Gordon hit an RBI single, Lorenzo Cain scored on a Jemile Weeks fielding error and Billy Butler hit another sacrifice fly.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie held the A's to just three hits and two walks in eight innings, also striking out eight. The A's batters once again proved to be free-swinging, striking out 12 times in the game.

Here is the lineup for tonight's game between the Oakland Athletics and the Kansas City Royals. Let's start with how the Athletics lineup looks.

Coco Crisp, CF
Jemile Weeks, 2B
Josh Reddick, RF
Yoenis Cespedes, LF
Chris Carter, 1B
Brandon Moss, DH
George Kottaras, C
Josh Donaldson, 3B
Cliff Pennington, SS

The first five batters are probably some of the A's best, with Carter moving to first base tonight. Moss takes over as the DH and gives the Athletics decent power on the inside. George Kottaras starts at catcher. Two of the weaker spots come at the bottom of the order with Donaldson at third base in the eight hole and Pennington wrapping things up at shortstop.

Pennington has struggled for most of his career against the pitcher he'd face tonight, one Jeremy Guthrie. Can he put it together tonight?

Here is the Royals lineup.

Alex Gordon, LF
Alcides Escobar, SS
Billy Butler, DH
Mike Moustakas, 3B
Salvador Perez, C
Jeff Francoeur, RF
Eric Hosmer, 1B
Lorenzo Cain, CF
Chris Getz, 2B

Brandon Inge is headed to the disabled list, having earned the respect of everyone associated with baseball. Simply put: Inge is one tough dude.

Against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, Inge dislocated his shoulder diving for an infield hit by Alex Rios. He then promptly popped it back into place and finished the game. Inge hasn't played since.

The Oakland Athletics' Twitter account announced Tuesday that Inge has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. The team has called up Josh Donaldson from Triple-A Sacramento to serve as his replacement.

Poor Donaldson has a big sling to fill after what Inge just did, and in the regular season, at that. Inge let his teammates know that if he can, he's going to be on the field. That's all players want from each other -- the knowledge that their teammates will be there for them if they can.

Inge can't right now, but at least his teammates know that it's due to a doctor's orders and not Inge's own.

The Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Gate is reporting that Josh Donaldson will join the Oakland Athletics in Kansas City, all but ensuring that Brandon Inge heads to the disabled list after dislocating his shoulder on Saturday night.

Inge continued to play the game on Saturday (reportedly popping the shoulder back in himself - gross), but teams tend to play it nice on a third basemen's throwing arm. Although the team hasn't announced it, the call up of Donaldson will come at the space of Inge.

Donaldson opened the season as the starting third baseman but hit just .153 through 28 games before being demoted back down to AAA. He has split his time between third and catcher and is hitting .335/.402/.598 through 51 games in Sacramento with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs.

Despite being unable to hit at the major league level so far, Donaldson has a pretty decent glove capable of some great plays, and the A's have envisioned him as someone who could contribute as a utility player.

The Oakland Athletics have been proving to everyone that they're a strong team, but boy, do they ever strike out a lot. The A's ran into a big inning against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday and ended up taking a 7-3 loss against lefty Chris Sale. With the loss, the A's also dropped the three-game series to Chicago.

Adam Dunn hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning to get the White Sox on the board. The A's tied things up in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run from Jonny Gomes, but the 1-1 deadlock didn't last long.

In the bottom of the sixth, Oakland starter Bartolo Colon gave up five quick runs on an A.J. Pierzynski homer and RBI singles from Dewayne Wise and Gordon Beckham. Adam Rosales hit another solo homer in the seventh to make it 6-2, but the Sox got that run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout.

Derek Norris hit one last solo home run for Oakland in the top of the ninth, but that was all that the A's could manage.

Thanks to an Angels loss on Sunday, the A's remain 1.5 games ahead of Los Angeles and in second place in the American League West.
