Much of the attention for the 2012 U.S. Open Championship went to local-legend Tiger Woods and his career comeback attempt, some of it went to 17-year old phenom Beau Hossler and his improbable run, and the rest probably went to the difficulty of the course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco as no competitors managed to stay under par on the weekend.

Yet, Webb Simpson managed to quietly fly under the radar and end up winning the tournament with a 1-over par on the tournament, and in doing so he captured his first career major in only his fifth appearance in one.

Simpson joined WFNZ in Charlotte, N.C. with The Drive, to share a little bit about his experience at the Open, the course at the Olympic Club, and what it means for him going forward in his career. He also talked about Tiger Woods, because of course they asked him about Tiger Woods. Thanks to SportsRadioInterviews for transcribing the interesting interview.

When did the thought creep first creep into your mind that you could win the U.S. Open?:

"I didn't look at the board until I was done putting on 18. I just didn't think it could help me in any way. I never had a thought that I can't win, but I didn't expect to win this early. I've only played in four majors prior, so more than anything I was just looking to gain experience through the week. I found myself there on the back nine in contention, so I figured I better take advantage of it because it doesn't come often."

Did it help that you were coming from back in the pack on Saturday and Sunday so there wasn't a lot of added pressure?:

"I think so. Playing in a final group would have certainly been a lot more pressure I think, just given the circumstances and the pressure surrounding that in itself. I figured being the fourth-to-last group was a great place for me to be because I'm close to the leaders, but I'm far enough ahead where I can make some birdies and make some noise and put a little pressure on them coming in."

Do you think there's something wrong with Tiger Woods' game, perhaps psychologically, or is it there and he's just got to put it together?:

"I think he gets so much criticism when he doesn't win, but the fact is he's won two huge tournaments this year already. ... I have so much respect for the guy. He's won 14 majors and I've only won one and having gone through what I did yesterday, I realize that winning 14 is far more spectacular than I thought. But his game's there. I think the game is so competitive right now that it's harder to win now than ever. I think he's going to win a lot more."

How much harder was that course compared to the courses you play week-in and week-out?:

"It's so much harder. Everything about it is harder. The greens are firm and fast, the rough's up, the fairways are firm. And Olympic's such a great venue because there's one fairway bunker on the whole golf course, I'm pretty sure, and no water hazards to speak of really, that come into play. You take a golf course with no water hazards and one bunker and it's that hard, you know you've got a fair, tough test in front of you. It was a course where you can make birdies, but also if you didn't think about where you were trying to place your approach shot, you could make bogeys and doubles so quickly."

Webb Simpson won his first career Grand Slam event on Sunday as his final score of 1-over held up to capture the title at the 2012 U.S. Open. As a result of his big win, Simpson will pull in the winner's share of the purse, which is a whopping $1.44 million.

Simpson isn't the only one earning a big payday, as plenty of golfers will see payouts in the high six figures for their time spent dealing with the challenging course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Not earning any money, of course, is 17-year-old Beau Hossler, who is unable to earn any money as an amateur, but earned invaluable exposure as the breakout star of the tournament.

Here are the payouts for the final Top 10 standings in the 2012 U.S. Open:

1 Webb Simpson (+1): $1,440,000
T2 Michael Thompson (+2): $695,916
T2 Graeme McDowell (+2): $695,916
T4 Jason Dufner (+3): $276,841
T4 Padraig Harrington (+3): $276,841
T4 David Toms (+3): $276,841
T4 John Peterson (+3): $276,841
T4 Jim Furyk (+3): $276,841
9 Ernie Els (+4): $200,280
T10 John Senden (+5): $163,594
T10 Kevin Chappell (+5): $163,594
T10 Casey Wittenberg (+5): $163,594
T10 Retief Goosen (+5): $163,594
T10 Lee Westwood (+5): $163,594

Throughout most of Saturday and nearly all of Sunday, the 2012 U.S. Open was looking like Jim Furyk's Grand Slam event to lose. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened in the fourth and final round on Sunday.

Furyk stayed strong through the difficult first six holes, only bogeying on the sixth hole to fall to even in the tournament, but still stayed atop the leaderboard as other golfers -- including co-leader at the start of the day Graeme McDowell -- faltered all around him. The pressure was too much for Furyk late in the game, as he bogeyed three times on the back nine, including twice in the final three holes to fall to 4-over for the day and into a tie for fourth place at 3-over in the tournament.

Webb Simpson, meanwhile, bogeyed twice in the opening six holes but then reeled off four birdies to go to 2-under on the day and 1-over in the tournament. Simpson then sat in the clubhouse and watched as Furyk and McDowell finished their rounds. When first Furyk and then McDowell missed their birdie shots on the 18th hole, Simpson knew he had secured his first career Grand Slam title.

Bet you didn't expect Webb Simpson to win the 2012 U.S. Open, but there he was holding the trophy Sunday night in San Francisco at the Olympic Club. Simpson had a solid final round by going under-par thanks to a stretch of four birdies in five holes midway through. Simpson then saw Jim Furyk flub a few holes down the stretch.

Tiger Woods did not perform well this weekend, ending up at +7 after all was said and done Sunday. Woods came into the weekend at -1 but struggled through Saturday and Sunday with ten overall bogeys and a double bogey in his final round.

Tiger Woods finished off a solid Thursday and Friday with a disappointing weekend. Sunday was not especially nice to any of the biggest leaders, and Woods suffered as well. Woods got off to a rough start when he bogeyed the first, second, fifth and sixth holes, as well as double-bogeying the third. Tiger managed three birdies the rest of the way, but the damage had been done to his round as his U.S. Open championship hopes were completely dashed. Woods finished with a 73 on the day and a +7 overall on the tournament.

Woods is still in a good spot to finish in the top 25. The current co-leaders right now still on the golf course are Webb Simpson and Jim Furyk at +1.

Round 4 of the 2012 U.S. Open continues at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, and through four holes Jim Furyk has taken sole possession of the lead. Simply by virtue of holding at par, Furyk has passed Graeme McDowell, with whom he opened the day in a tie for the lead.

Tiger Woods has struggled even more in Round 4 than he did in Round 3, standing at 5-over through the first ten. He has settled down a bit since picking up four bogeys and a double bogey in the first five, but any chance he had at closing in on the leaders appears to be gone. Bay Area and Northern California representatives have had a mixed day: Fresno's Nick Watney had the best day, shooting par to finish at 7-over for the tournament, Cal graduate Charlie Wi is 5-over through 12, San Mateo born Michael Allen shot a 73 to finish at 14-over for the tournament and Redding born Jeff Curl shot 5-over to also finish at +14.

Furyk has taken the lead but things are still tremendously close at the top of the leader board, so as Round 4 continues there should be plenty of action among the leaders.

Wi had a respectable Round 3, scoring a 71 after posting a 70 in Round 2 and a 74 in Round 1. That left him at +5 entering Round 4. That's a good distance out of the lead but given the crowding at the top of the leaderboard an improvement of a few strokes could see big gains in the standings. Wi teed off at 1:20pm PDT, paired with Aaron Watkins. Wi wasn't the only Cal grad at the 2012 U.S. Open; James Hahn posted a +13 through the first two rounds and failed to make the cut on Friday.

When the final day of the 2012 U.S. Open tournament tees off on Sunday, the two leaders will be paired together -- although there is a chance they may no longer be the leaders by the time they begin their fourth and final round.

Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell enter the final day of the Grand Slam event tied atop the leaderboard at 1-under and hold a two-stroke lead over the third-place Fredrik Jacobson. Lee Westwood and Ernie Els are close behind and Tiger Woods is five strokes back. While unlikely on the difficult course, Woods holds an outside chance at picking up his fourth career U.S. Open victory.
