The Stanford Cardinal didn’t stand a chance in Tallahassee. Their pitching imploded from the outset of their Super Regional contest, giving up a combined 35 runs in two games to the hard-hitting Florida State Seminoles.

In Game 1 on Friday, first round draft pick Mark Appel was shelled for seven runs (five earned) in four innings before being chased. The Cardinal ended up surrendering 17 runs in a 17-1 defeat, and looked totally feckless for most of the contest.

Stanford bowed out in a slightly less embarrassing but still humbling performance on Sunday, as they rallied with a four-run bout in the bottom of the seventh to cut a 10-2 lead to 10-6 before Florida State buried the Cardinal with eight runs in the eighth inning. Florida State will now move on to face Arizona in the College World Series.

The Stanford Cardinal have advanced to their 13th Super Regional in their school's history after fighting off a hungry Pepperdine squad Sunday night at Sunken Diamond to claim the Palo Alto regional by the score of 8-7.

The Cardinal came back from an early four-run deficit after Pepperdine scored four times in the top of the first. Stephen Piscotty kept the Cardinal in the game as it made its comeback, retiring 12 in a row from the final out of the first inning until one out in the fifth. Stanford would take the lead for good in the fourth after a two-out, five-run rally, though the Wave tried valiantly to fight back.

Pepperdine scored three more times on four straight hits against Piscotty to make it 8-7 in the seventh, But Sahil Bloom would come on and hold Pepperdine scoreless over the final 2.2 innings to earn his first save of the year and hold Piscotty's five win of the year.

Stanford (41-16) will now travel to Tallahassee, Florida to take on national No. 3 seed Florida State in next weekend's best-of-3 Super Regional for the chance to make it to their 17th College World Series appearance. Game dates and times are yet to be announced

There have been rumors for months that Stanford Cardinal ace pitcher Mark Appel would be selected by the Houston Astros with the No. 1 pick at the 2012 MLB Draft. A few whispers in recent days suggested the Astros may be looking elsewhere with their pick, but those reports were nullified on Sunday, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.

According to a tweet from Bowden the Astros have decided to select Appel on Monday with their top pick.

Appel is a right-handed pitcher with excellent stuff on the mound. For an Astros team that has been pretty miserable the last few seasons he is capable of turning the franchise around at the top of their rotation, something their new ownership would love as they make the move to the American League East.

This is still just a report and is yet to be confirmed by Houston, but this seems like a lock at this point.

The 2012 MLB Draft is set to begin on June 4.
