Less than 24 hours after Gavin Floyd and Tom Milone engaged in a heated pitchers' duel, the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox were at it again in a tense game on Wednesday that went to extra innings ... and then some. A blown save resulted in a 14-inning test of wills that saw the A's come from behind to walk off with a 5-4 win.

Parker and his Chicago opponent Chris Sale held the game scoreless for the first five-and-a-half innings. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, the A's opened the scoring as Josh Reddick and Yoenis Cespedes had back-to-back RBI hits. Reddick's double was the only extra-base hit of the game for the A's.

Parker finally yielded a run in the top of the seventh, on a Kosuke Fukudome RBI double. Parker exited the game and the Oakland bullpen was able to shut things down until the ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Grant Balfour came in for the save and on his first pitch, Paul Konerko launched a leadoff home run over the left-field wall to tie the game. The homer on the high fastball was just the second run allowed by Balfour in 2012, but the result was a blown save. The home run was an historic one, as it was Konerko's 400th as a member of the White Sox.

The game headed to extra innings with the score knotted 2-2. A.J. Pierzynski managed to reach third base with two outs in the top of the 11th on a single and throwing error, but Jordan Norberto struck out Dayan Viciedo to end the inning.

In the top of the 13th, Adam Dunn led off with a double down the right field line. The pinch runner Brent Lillibridge was picked off second base. Konerko was intentionally walked and replaced with pinch runner Gordon Beckham. After Pierzynski popped up, Alex Rios doubled down the left-field line, but Beckham was thrown out at home to preserve the tie.

The White Sox were able to get two men on with two outs in the top of the 14th and Alexei Ramirez drove them both in with a double off of Jim Miller, to put the Sox ahead, 4-2

It wasn't over just yet, however. With one out in the bottom of the 14th, Reddick singled to center field and Cespedes followed up with one of his trademark two-strike monster shots to left-center that tied the game once again. The homer was Cespedes' fifth of the season. Seth Smith and Kurt Suzuki then hit back-to-back singles and Kila Ka`aihue hit an opposite-field bloop that dropped in just inside the left-field line and provided the walk-off win of the game and the series.

Parker finished with a quality start of 6.1 innings pitched, allowing one run on seven hits and a walk, with five strikeouts. Sale was every bit as sharp as Parker, going a full eight innings and allowing two runs on six hits, with five strikeouts and no walks issued.

Thompson, 27, was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels last week. He took on just three batters during his stint with Oakland, recording a single and two outs.

The Angels DFA’d the Australian-born righty after he allowed four runs in his first 2 1/3 innings of work. Thompson earned a 3.00 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 54 innings last season. Thompson is currently out of options; he can’t be sent to the minor without first clearing waivers.

The Oakland Athletics are off to a pretty good start to their 2012 campaign, thanks greatly in part to their starting pitching staff, which many felt would struggle after breaking up most of it via trade last season and this offseason. One of these strong up-and-comers is left-hander Tom Milone, who was superb in Tuesday night's blanking of the Chicago White Sox.

After the game manager Bob Melvin took to the microphone, discussing not only Milone's outing but the development of the entire pitching staff as well, which Melvin admits is still developing but have lots of potential.

there was some unknowns...down the road there are high ceilings for all of them...there just not as experienced yet, we know we are developing they guys, and we know they are going to get better...we have a lot of faith in them obviously or we wouldn't have made those deals.

The Oakland Athletics scored a much-needed win on Tuesday night, as they took the second game of their three-game home series against the Chicago White Sox by a final score of 2-0. Now the A's will have a chance to try for a series win in Wednesday's rubber game at the O.co Coliseum.

The story in this one was the pitching, as A's starter Tommy Milone dueled with Gavin Floyd for eight innings. Through the first three and a half innings, the teams managed just one baserunner each, both reaching on errors. In the bottom of the fourth, A's second baseman Jemile Weeks finally managed a hit off of Floyd.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the A's had recorded just two hits off of Floyd and the White Sox had managed just three off of Milone. Oakland finally gave their starter some run support in the eighth, however, as Daric Barton drew a leadoff walk. After striking out Luke Hughes, Floyd was removed from the game and Matt Thornton came in to face pinch hitter Kurt Suzuki, who promptly doubled home Barton. Although that would be all the offense the A's would need, Eric Sogard singled home Suzuki with two outs. Grant Balfour came in for the save, striking out Adam Dunn swinging to end the game.

Milone improved to 3-1 with a dazzling win, going eight shutout innings of three-hit, no-walk baseball, while striking out five. Floyd was charged with one run on two hits and two walks in 7.1 innings and picked up six strikeouts.

On Monday, the Oakland Athletics welcomed the Chicago White Sox to town for the first game of a three-game series. The A's felt pretty good about their chances of starting the series off strong, as they had Bartolo Colon taking the hill for the start. Colon has been the most dominant and consistent starter for Oakland thus far in 2012 and was going for another win. He pitched well once again, but the Oakland offense was shut out by Chicago starter Jake Peavy en route to a 4-0 loss.

The White Sox opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning, with back-to-back solo home runs by Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko to lead off the innings. Those solo shots were the only times in the game Colon would falter, as he finished with just the two runs allowed on seven hits and three walks over seven innings of work. His ERA is now at 2.62.

Fautino De Los Santos came in to pitch the ninth inning for the A's and immediately gave up a double to Brent Morel, who moved to third on a wild pitch. A single by the next batter, Gordon Beckham, brought Morel home for another Chicago insurance run. Alejandro De Aza singled and Alexei Ramirez reached on an error, loading the bases with no outs. De Los Santos was lifted for Jerry Blevins, who struck out Dunn looking. Rich Thompson came in to pitch and got Konerko to line out, but A.J. Pierzynski got a questionable hit (that probably should have been ruled an error on Jemile Weeks) to keep the bases loaded and make the score 4-0 White Sox. A pop-up finally ended the inning.

White Sox starter Jake Peavy was even better than Colon, allowing just three hits and two walks to Oakland batters in the complete game shutout. Weeks, Coco Crisp and Yoenis Cespedes were the lucky A's batters who picked up hits.

The Oakland Athletics will host the Chicago White Sox for a three-game series beginning on Monday. The White Sox have been on a roll lately.

On Monday, the Oakland Athletics will host the Chicago White Sox for the first game in a three-game series at the O.co Coliseum. The Sox will enter the series 9-6 and a half-game behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

Chicago is fresh off a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field where they swept the hometown team. The second game of that sweep featured a perfect game by pitcher Philip Humber, so the White Sox are definitely clicking on all cylinders at this point.

By contrast, the Athletics have just dropped two out of three games to the Cleveland Indians, but hope to wrap up the home stand with a winning series.

On Monday, the game will begin at 7:05 p.m. PT and will air on CSN-CA. You can listen to the radio broadcast on 95.7 FM The Game. Bartolo Colon, who has been Oakland's best pitcher this season, will get the start. He'll go up against 2-0 right-hander Jake Peavy.
