Appearing on XM/Sirus radio THursday morning, former Atlanta Braves pitcher and likely Hall of Famer John Smoltz was asked about just what is wrong with San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum at the moment. Never one to hold his tongue, Smoltz had some interesting remarks about the Freak, claiming he has lost his edge, and may need to make some adjustments to his inique delivery crafted by Tim and his father Chris Lincecum.

Here is Smoltz's comments in full (via SF Chronicle's Hank Schulman)

---

"Well, I would say there was something going on last year. I would date it back to last year. Watching him I did not feel ... This guy knows how to pitch, OK? First of all, he's got the curse. And the curse is everybody who knew anything, or thought they knew anything, said he cannot continue at this pace. Now, they developed this - him and his dad - these perfect mechanics and the ability for this five-foot-nothing, you know, 130, 40, 50 pounds, whatever he weighs.

"It's just not possible. Now, that's why he was called ‘The Freak.' But the things that have to go on in baseball is you constantly have to adjust and, mechanically, he's got a lot of moving parts. It's like a helicopter. It can get you to where you want to go and it can be very safe but there's a lot of things that can go wrong that give you a limited success rate of landing it. And I think that's the one thing going on right now. I don't know if it is physical. Could be, very well could be. But I know this: I mean, he knows how to pitch, he'll battle his way through it but I would say last year was not the same Lincecum that we've seen that has won two Cy Youngs and has dominated pitching.

"And I think once you start showing those cracks or once it starts showing a little more human factor, I mean, the edge is gone a little bit when you face a guy like this. He had an edge, much like Tiger. These elite pitchers have an edge when they get on the mound. The other team knows, ‘Shoot, we're in trouble.' And right now you just want to label it as, OK, three rough starts, but I think all eyes are going to be on him to see, for the outside looking in, when does his fastball pop again, his split go down, his curveball, his changeup?

" Those are the things, hitters will tell you, and I used to work on this theory: I never concerned myself with one or two bad games. Three in a row? Word's getting around. I always used to use three as the gauge to say, ‘Ok, I gotta make some adjustments here as a pitcher.' "

---

I agree that adjustments are what keep you around in the Major Leagues, and Timmy isn't doesn't seem to be built for them. He tried gaining weight last season, tried to limit his slider this season, none of which have helped him. His velocity has been down, and his accuracy has been way down, especially with two strikes (currently owns a .667 BAA in 0-2 counts this year).

Ask Brandon McCarthy. Hell, ask Jamie Moyer. Adjusting to the competition is what will keep you at the top of your game. The bell curve seems to be leveling for most hitters at the same time that Lincecum is struggling, a bad mixture for the Giants indeed. He's had his rough patches before, but there certainly is cause for alarm after three straight Todd Welemeyer-like starts.

The analogy of Tim's delivery and a helicopter is incredibly apt in my opinion, and you can see that 'edge' hasn't been there much of the time on the mound. Maybe he's stuck in his head, maybe it's a physical problem, but regardless he needs to correct it.

Hopefully the Freak can figure it out sooner than later.

The news we were all expecting game down on Wednesday night as San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson will go under the knife for his second Tommy John surgery of his career, sitting out until the start of 2013 at least for the Giants, if he in fact remains a Giant.

The renowned sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery, with the usual recovery/rehabilitation process taking around 12 months to fully complete.

Wilson, per usual, has his own, unique take on the situation:

"The first time I got (Tommy John surgery), I looked at it as an opportunity to throw harder," Wilson said on Sunday. "You know, 21-year-old kid, I get to throw harder? That's pretty awesome. The difficult thing is the monotony of all the exercises and the time it takes. ... It's the mental part that can be overbearing, but you know what? I've done it once. Do it again. That's the case."

In six years in the major leagues, Wilson has career 3.21 ERA, 171 saves, 340 strikeouts, and 25 blown saves in 320 innings pitched.

Matt Cain and Cliff Lee were in the zone Wednesday night at AT&T Park as the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies were looking for the victory in the rubber match of the series, each completing at least nine innings of shutout ball. But it was Melky Cabrera playing hero tonight, earning the walkoff single in the 11th inning for the incredible 1-0 win.

Cain was coming off of a one hit shutout his last time out on Opening day at AT&T, but finished the night with nine innings of shutout work, giving up only two hits, one walk and four strikeouts on a tidy 91 pitches. Lee was up to the task as well, going the extra mile by throwing 10 shutout innings, including seven hits, seven strikeouts and no walks on 102 pitches.

Amazingly neither came away with a decision as Antonio Bastardo took the loss gave up a single to Brandon Belt to start the rally, then an error get Angel Pagan on base to set it up for the Melkman. In fact, Melky was the only player of the game to have multiple hits, finishing 3-5 on the night. Clay Hensley earned his first win as a Giant.

Brett Pill earned the only base hit of the evening for San Francisco, while Buster Posey grounded into two of the team's four double plays on the night, finishing 1-4.

After trying the series at one apiece Tuesday night, the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies will square off in the finale of their three game set with a pair of aces on the hill in Matt Cain and Cliff Lee at AT&T Park.

Cain (1-0, 3.00 ERA) made the most of his opening day start against the Pirates last Friday after tossing a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and no walks in what is arguably his best start at AT&T Park in his career. It was the third one hitter, fifth shutout, and 14th complete game of his career.

As for Lee (0-1, 3.46 ERA) who took his first loss of the season against the Mets in his last start, He''l look to earn his first win of the season, while trying to ock up only the fourth series at AT&T Park for Philadelphia since 2000. Lee owns a 3-0 record and 0.72 ERA in three starts at AT&T during the regular season, though his most memorable here was Game 1 of the NLDS while pitching to Texas, getting shelled for seven runs (six earned) and eight hits over 4.2 innings.

Shane Victorino has pushed his hitting steak to 10 games after a double on Tuesday night, though Pablo Sandoval one-upped him with his 11th straight game with a hit after his 2-4 night. Keep an eye on these guys tonight as well.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. PT this evening, with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM in and around the Bay. TCN and 1210 WPHT will have coverage in the Philadelphia area.

Only a day after signing his new extension, San Francisco Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner took the mound Tuesday night in search of a victory over the rival Philadelphia Phillies. Bumgarner was solid, and backed behind just enough offense on the night the Giants tied the series at one apiece by the score of 4-2 at AT&T Park.

The Giants got to the Phillies Joe Blanton (L 1-2) early an often, getting out to an early lead after an RBI triple from Melky Cabrera and and RBI groundout from Pablo Sandoval in the first inning. Blanton was roughed up for 11 hits and four runs on the night, getting knocked out after five innings of work after Nate Schierholtz and Brandon Crawford earned RBI's against him with a single and fielder's choice respectfully.

As for Bumgarner (W 2-1), he was steady throughout his outing after allowing two runs on seven hits along with one walk and two strikeouts, throwing 96 in six innings pitched on the night en route to his second victory of the season. Clay Hensley and Sergio Romo held the Phils in check, while Santiago Casilla earned the save in the ninth.

Five Giants had a multi-hit game on Tuesday, lead by Schierholtz's 3-3 night with an RBI and a walk, Buster Posey went 3-4, Pablo Sandoval went 2-4, while Angel Pagan went 2-5. As for Philadelphia, Hunter Pence's homer in the fourth was their big hit on the night, finishing 1-3, while Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins finished 1-4.

Another poor start from Tim Lincecum lead to a sour finish on Monday night at AT&T, but after the good news of Madison Bumgarner's extension the San Francisco Giants are looking for their big left-hander to turn the tides on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Bumgarner signed a 5-year, $35 million contract with the Black and Orange before the game Monday, looking for his second win of the season after his 7.1 innings of work against the Rockies out in Denver last time out. The 22-year old gave up only one run on four hits along two walks two punchouts, hopefully backing it up with another gem at AT&T Park after his big payday.
