The San Francisco Giants were looking to avoid being swept to start their 2012 campaign against the Arizona Diamondbacks, handing it over to Matt Cain to get the job done Sunday afternoon. The Black and Orange gave Cain a big lead early, but the D-backs clawed their way back by way of he long ball once again, eventually earning themselves the 7-6 come from behind victory.

Brandon Crawford and Emmanuel Burriss got the Giants started in the second with a two RBI double and an RBI groundout respectfully, followed by an RBI single in the third from Pablo Sandoval. Buster Posey launched his first home run of the first home run of the year in the very next at bat, giving the G-men a comfortable 6-0 lead.

But then it was the D-backs turn to do some damage, getting a two RBI double from Lyle Overbay in the botom of the fourth, than launching back-to-back jacks off Cain in the sixth by virtue of Ryan Roberts and Overbay once more to make it 6-5. Miguel Montero and Chris Young grounded into RBI fielder's choices in the seventh, with Aaron Hill scoring off of Buster Posey's second error of the year to take the lead 7-6. Skipper Bruce Bochy would get ejected this inning, and it never got any better for for the Black and Orange, suffering their third loss in as many days.

The loss would get tagged to Jeremy Affeldt, though Cain gave up five earned runs in his six innings of work, along with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Giants now head to Colorado for a three game set starting Monday.

It's been a bit of a rough start for the 2012 San Francisco Giants. They've had two back-to-back decent offensive outings against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but unfortunately Arizona had been getting to the starting pitchers early, putting the Black and Orange in an early hole to start the season. San Francisco will now turn to Matt Cain, baseball's newest $100 million man, to right the ship and avoid the sweep at the hands of Kirk Gibson's reigning NL West champs.

Despite the fact that Cain will make $127.5 million over the life of his contract, he notes that hopefully it won't affect his play on the field one bit:

"I feel like I don't need to be motivated that way," Cain said. "I'm going to be motivated by playing."

Cain isn't out to end this two game skid, because it's actually an eight game skid dating back to last season. Arizona has simply had the Giants number as of late, though they'll have the chance to change all that this afternoon. Josh Collmenter takes to the mound in his 2012 debut for the D-backs, looking to improve on a rather mundane spring. He gave up just as many homers ans he did strikeouts during his time in the Cactus League this year with five, but is looking to keep the Giants in check once more.

The Giants offense has been doing it's part more or less, scoring eight runs in their first two games with home runs aplenty. Hopefully they can keep it up on Easter Sunday for a most needed victory at Chase Field.

First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

Two-run homers from Pablo Sandoval and Brett Pill would prove not enough as the Giants fell to the D-backs 5-4 Saturday afternoon.

After the San Francisco Giants watched ace Tim Lincecum get shelled in his Opening Day start on Friday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Madison Bumgarner took to the mound hoping for better results. Unfortunately they did not come as Aaron Hill knocked a pair of homers off the Giants left hander, helping Arizona put the Giants away by the score of 5-4 for the second straight game at Chase Field.

Bumgarner (L 0-1) struggled for the second straight season in his opening day game, allowing four earned runs in four innings pitched, giving up seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Hill took him deep in both the first and second innings, while Chris Young added a RBI double in between.

Pablo Sandoval got the Giants rally started off in the fourth, launching a two-run homer off Daniel Hudson to right field. Brett Pill made his 2012 debut pinch hitting in the seventh, making the most of the appearance with a laser shot for a two-run jack of his own, bringing the Giants to within one.

J.J. Putz earned his second save in as many games, while Hudson (W 1-0) finished with the win after giving up four runs in 6.2 innings of work, along with two walks and four strikeouts. Pablo Sandoval finished 2-3 for the game, while Buster Posey was 0-4.

The San Francisco Giants are not going to win many games in 2012 without a healthy and productive Buster Posey behind the plate. The young catcher went down last season to a gruesome ankle injury and has spent most of the last 10 months recovering and rehabbing from surgery. It was no coincidence that the Giants offensive production made a turn for the worst once they lost Posey.

Now, with all eyes on him as he made his return to baseball, Posey looked and felt like his old self on Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Assuming this trend continues, Giants fans should have a lot to get excited about in the coming months.

Not only does he provide San Francisco with an impact bat in the middle of the batting order, but he also brings familiarity and stability for the pitching staff. The pitchers love working with Posey and he calls a great game despite not having a ton of Major League experience.

CSN Bay Area caught up with Posey after the game. He was incredibly optimistic.

"I felt normal," said Posey, uttering three words that will give hope to any Giants fan.

[...]

It might be a little optimistic to say the injury is behind Posey. He's been warned by the training staff to expect bouts of soreness all year long. There will be times when he will need a break; it's likely he will start at first base on Monday in Colorado, for instance.

But for now, Posey is thrilled with where he's at.

"It's been continuing to improve," he said. "The more I'm out there, the less I think about it. I tried my best in the spring to simulate what the intensity level would feel like. I'm really happy with where I am."

Keeping the young catcher healthy for 2012 will be a huge assignment for the training staff. He is going to need some time off, and sometimes it may be best to hold him out of the game even if he feels pretty good. Risking further serious injury for one game just isn't worth it for such a talented player.

It was a beautiful evening at Chase Field in Phoenix as the defending NL West champion Arizona Diamondbacks played host to the San Francisco Giants for their 2012 Opening Night. It was a battle of the aces as Tim Lincecum and Ian Kennedy took to the mound, but a big first inning would prove too much for the Black and Orange, eventually falling 5-4 in their season opener.

The majority of the Diamondbacks damage came in the first inning off of Lincecum, coming in the form of a Chris Young two-run jack followed by a Paul Goldschmidt solo home run a few batters later.

The Giants would strike back in the fifth with a two-run homer from newcomer Melky Cabrera, and an RBI groundout from Brandon Crawford in the sixth, scoring Angel Pagan after his first hit as a Giant.

Arizona would load the bases in their half of the sixth, plating two with a Ryan Roberts double to left field, prompting skipper Bruce Bochy to take out the Freak. Timmy would finish with five earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched, along with six hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.

Kennedy would depart after 6.2 innings of work, allowing three earned runs nine Giants hits, along with two walks and three strikeouts. Joe Patterson and David Hernandez held the G-Men in check the rest of the way, turning it over to J.J. Putz for the save in the ninth.

Gregor Blanco hit a pinch hit liner off Willie Bloomquist's glove, giving the Giants some life in the top of the ninth. Angel Pagan would strikeout, Melky Cabrera would strikeout, leaving it up to Pablo Sandoval. Pablo would hit a clutch RBI double to left center field, cutting the lead to one. But Buster Posey would ground out in his first career at bat against Putz, ending the game.

Cabrera and Sandoval finished the game 2-5, while Buster Posey was 2-4 with a walk
