The New England Patriots were the slight favorites in Super Bowl XLVI, but fell to the New York Giants on Sunday. Although the San Francisco 49ers missed out on making it to the big game, they are almost certainly already thinking about next season. Coincidentally, so are the oddsmakers, who have already released a cursory list of odds on each team winning next year's Super Bowl.

Joe Fortenbaugh of the National Football Post relays the early odds for next year's Super Bowl. The Niners are currently looking at 20-1 odds against them going all the way next year, putting them in the same tier as teams such as the Falcons, Lions, Cowboys and Jets. The New York Giants are currently at 20-1, but expect them to jump in the rankings following their big Super Bowl win. The Niners will likely do everything that can to make sure those odds are looking more favorable once next season is in full swing. If you wanted a comparison, the early odds following Super Bowl XLV put the Niners at 40-1, but those odds had actually increased to 60-1 just before the season started. It seems this current 49ers team is well-versed in overcoming odds.

The early favorites for next year's Super Bowl are the Green Bay Packers at 5-1, the New Orleans Saints at 6-1 and the New England Patriots at 8-1.

The longest shots for winning it all in 2013 are the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, St. Louis Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars, all looking at 100-1 odds.

Super Bowl Sunday has come and gone, leaving one Bay Area native a big winner in terms of personal performance. Tom Brady, born and raised in San Mateo, was calling the shots and taking the snaps for the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI and had himself quite a night.

Brady tossed a terrific game of "pigskin," finishing with 27 completions on 41 pass attempts, including a Super Bowl-record stretch of 16 straight completions. He racked up 276 passing yards and added on two touchdowns in the game, while only throwing one interception.

It's safe to say that the local boy has made good. It's hard to imagine anything topping Brady's achievements from tonight. This is certainly a performance he will look back on for years with pride.

The New York Giants picked up their fourth all-time Super Bowl title on Sunday when they defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. The Giants are now one of five teams with four or more Super Bowl wins in franchise history.

The Giants were previously locked in a tie with the Patriots, the Raiders and the Washington Redskins with three Super Bowl titles each. The fourth Super Bowl title now brings them in line with the Green Bay Packers with four titles. The franchises still ahead of them in the all-time list are the Pittsburgh Steelers (still in first place with six titles), the Dallas Cowboys and of course, the San Francisco 49ers.

Niners fans will not need to worry just yet about head-to-head comparisons between the two franchises. Even if the Giants manage to make it to another Super Bowl title before the 49ers have another shot, the Niners will still have their perfect 5-0 record in the big game to lord over the Giants and their fans. In addition, the four titles for the Giants were spread out over 25 years, from 1987 until 2012. The Niners picked up their five titles in just 13 seasons, from 1982 until 1995.

In fact, the 49ers are the only franchise with multiple titles to never have lost on the grandest stage. That remains a staggering achievement and puts San Francisco in a class by itself.

The New York Giants have emerged victorious over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Casual fans tuned into the game in droves and it's a virtual certainty that the talk in offices tomorrow will focus more on the commercials than on the game itself. As always, there were a plethora of "event" ads to tickle the fancy of just about every type of viewer.

This year certainly provided a bumper crop of ads, ranging from simple cheesecake to slightly-less-simple beefcake. So basically your normal night of television viewing. Let's take a look at some of the standouts from the 2012 Super Bowl.

Three of the standout commercials in my mind were all car ads. Chevy's post-apocalyptic Silverado ad was good for a couple of cheap gags and sometimes that's all you need. Some people might get rankled by the petty jab at Ford, but I'm all for it. More jabs at competing companies, all the time, I say!

Hyundai's "Gonna Fly Now" ad. You know what sports fans love? Rocky. You know what non-sports fans love? Rocky IV. This commercial splits the difference and presents the iconic movie theme in a cute little package. Can't-miss proposition.

Audi's "Vampire Party" was horrifying in its casual mass slaying of the seemingly-benign undead. My only real gripe with this commercial was that not a single vampire in this entire ad said, "BLEAH!" Not even once! How simple would it have been? Geez, Audi.

Eli Manning got the best of Brady once more in a Super Bowl. Despite Brady completing nearly 66% of his passes and putting two touchdowns in the end zone, Manning completed an incredible 75% of his passes and had one touchdown for 296 yards. And again, for another Super Bowl, Manning led a late fourth-quarter drive to put the Giants on top.

What a season for Eli.
