The Zappos.com West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament heads into day two on Thursday evening at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. A day after eighth seeded Portland knocked out ninth seeded Santa Clara, the second round brings in the first "bye teams." The entire tournament is available through live streaming, with ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU picking up the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals (in reverse order).

The No. 5 seed San Francisco Dons (18-12, 8-8) will meet the No. 8 seed Portland Pilots (7-23, 3-13) at 6 p.m. PST. The other second round matchup features the No. 6 seed San Diego Toreros (12-17, 7-9) meeting the No. 7 seed Pepperdine Waves (10-18, 4-12) 30 minutes after the conclusion of USF-Portland. Both games will be broadcast on BYUtv and live streamed on ESPN3.com.

The Dons enter the WCC tournament on a fairly strong run. They are 3-3 in their last six, but they knocked off Gonzaga and gave Saint Mary's a tough battle at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco. After a solid run through their non-conference schedule, San Francisco struggled out of the gates losing their first four conference games. They bounced back however and finished 8-8 in conference play. They have beaten Portland twice this year, with the most recent 72-71 win courtesy of a pair of Cody Doolin free throws with 17 seconds left to win.

Portland's win over Santa Clara helped them snap a six-game losing streak heading into the tournament. It has been a tough season for the Pilots with their only conference wins coming over Santa Clara and Pepperdine.

The winner of this game will face the No. 4 seed Loyola Marymount Lions on Friday night in a 6 p.m. PST game televised by ESPNU. The second game Friday night will pit the No. 3 seed BYU Cougars against the winner of San Diego-Pepperdine.

The Bay Area was well represented in the West Coast Conference end of season honors. We break down the USF and Saint Mary's players who were honored.

The West Coast Conference wrapped up their 2011-12 season with Saint Mary's taking home the regular season conference title. This marked SMC's first outright conference title since 1989. The Gaels were led by junior guard Matthew Dellavedova who capped off a strong campaign by earning the school's seventh conference player of the year award.

Dellavedova was the second straight Gael to claim the award, following in the footsteps of senior guard Mickey McConnell last season. Dellavedova was third in scoring with 15.4 points per game and led the conference in assists with 6.5 per game. His strong play-making abilities made him a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation's top point guard.

Along with Dellavedova, senior forward Rob Jones was named to the all-conference team. Jones led the conference with 10.7 rebounds per game and was fifth in scoring with 14.8 points per game. Sophomore guard Stephen Holt was an honorable mention following a season in which he averaged 10.4 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 3.3 APG and 1.8 SPG. Brad Waldow was named to the All-Freshman team after he completed the season with 7.9 PPG and 4.4 RPG.

The University of San Francisco finished the season in fifth place, but saw several players honored. Senior forward Angelo Caloiaro was named first team all-conference, while junior forward Perris Blackwell and senior guard Rashad Green were both named honorable mention all-conference.

Caloiaro turned in the finest season of his career in 2011-12 and led the team in nearly every statistical category, including scoring (14.7), rebounding (6,1) and 3-point field goal percentage (.397). Blackwell earned his second straight honorable mention after averaging 12.7 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. Green also earned honors for the second straight season after averaging 11.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

The San Francisco Dons wrapped up their 2011-12 regular season on Saturday with a tough loss to the Saint Mary's Gaels. USF was locked into the fifth seed in spite of the loss thanks to San Diego's loss to Gonzaga. USF claimed a huge upset win over Gonzaga last weekend, but was unable to build on it in a tough loss to the Gaels.

San Francisco now gets to wait for their second round opponent in the WCC tournament. USF will face the winner of Santa Clara-Portland, who square off on Wednesday. The winner of that matchup will advance to face San Francisco on Thursday, March 1. The Dons swept both series and will look to continue their strong play once the tournament gets going.

USF now sits only two wins away from a potential 20-win season. If USF can beat the winner of Santa Clara-Portland and then potentially spring an upset of Loyola Marymount, they could be looking at a possible NIT appearance. It will take some strong performances over the next week, but it remains a possibility.

The St. Mary's, Calif. Gaels visited the San Francisco Dons in a WCC showdown on Saturday night and the last regular-season game of the year. The Gaels picked up the 67-60 win after trailing at halftime and with the win, clinched the WCC regular season title. They will head into the WCC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Gaels won the title outright, marking the first time in the past decade that the Gonzaga Bulldogs have not won or claimed a share of the top spot in the conference.

The Gaels trailed at halftime by a score of 37-36 but came back in the second half to secure the seven-point win. Clint Steindl of St. Mary's led all scorers with 16 points. Rob Jones contributed a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Brad Waldow had 10 points and 12 board. On the USF side, Cody Doolin scored 13 points to lead the pack.

The Dons will enter the WCC Tournament as the No. 5 seed, based on the Gonzaga Bulldogs having defeated the San Diego Toreros.

The Saint Mary's Gaels travel across the Bay on Saturday to face the San Francisco Dons in the 172nd meeting of the Bay Area rivals. USF has lost twelve straight to the Gaels, but will be looking to build off their last second home upset of the Gonzaga Bulldogs last weekend. Saint Mary's is looking to clinch the WCC regular season title and deny Gonzaga a shared title for the first time in over a decade.

Thanks to the tie-breaker edge over Gonzaga, Saint Mary's has already clinched the number one seed in the tournament following their Thursday win over Portland. However, a Saint Mary's win on Saturday or a Gonzaga loss to San Diego would end Gonzaga's reign of conference regular season titles.

Saint Mary's has a bye through to the semifinals where they will face the winner of the 5/8/9/4 quarterfinal matchup. The eight and nine seeds (likely to be Portland and Santa Clara) square off in the Wednesday play-in game. The winner of that game advances to face the five seed in the second round. As it currently stands, USF would be that seed. They are currently a game up on San Diego, who is hosting Gonzaga on Saturday.

The winner of a potential USF/Santa Clara/Portland matchup would advance to face the four seed. Right now, Loyola Marymount is the four, but if LMU beats Santa Clara and Portland beats BYU (not likely), BYU drops into the four seed. The winner of that contest then advances to face Saint Mary's in the semifinals.

The San Francisco Dons were expecting a tough matchup as they hosted the No. 24 Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday night and they certainly got it. The WCC showdown came down to the wire, but the Dons were able to hold on for the 66-65 win to improve to 8-7 in WCC play and 18-11 overall.

USF took an early lead over Gonzaga and headed into halftime with a 36-33 lead. The Bulldogs played much better in the second half, actually outscoring the Dons by two points in the frame. The difference came down to the final seconds. The Dons trailed, 65-64, when Rashad Green nailed a jumper with three seconds left on the clock. Elias Harris missed the potential three-point buzzer beater with one second left and the Dons emerged victorious.

Harris led all scorers in the game with 21 points, adding the double-double with 10 rebounds. On the winning side, Green led Dons scorers with 16 points and five steals. Perris Blackwell added 14 points and nine rebounds.

With the loss, the Bulldogs drop to 11-3 in the WCC and 21-5 overall. The loss may very well usher them out of the top 25 on the national polls.

The Dons will play their next game on Saturday, February 25, as they host the St. Mary's Gaels.

The San Francisco Dons continue winding down their 2011-2012 season as they host the No. 24 Gonzaga Bulldogs at War Memorlal Gym Saturday evening at 5:00pm PT. The Dons are in the midst of a tough final home stretch that featured BYU on Thursday, Gonzaga on Saturday and Saint Mary's next Saturday. Saturday's game against Gonzaga will feature Bill Cartwright Appreciation Night, with the first 750 fans getting Cartwright replica jerseys.

The Dons lost a golden opportunity for a big win on Thursday as they suffered a last second defeat to the BYU Cougars. USF trailed for most of the game before securing their first lead with 46 seconds left. Perris Blackwell had a chance to widen the one point lead but missed the front end of a one-and-one. BYU freshman Matt Carlino drove in for a layup with 23 seconds, which was the difference in the game.

The Dons lost their first matchup with Gonzaga back in mid-January, falling 74-63. Angelo Caloiaro led USF with 14 points and 9 rebounds, but it was not enough to overcome four double digit scoring days for Gonzaga. Perris Blackwell had one of his weaker games of the year, but has since bounced back with double digit points in his last six games and back-to-back double-doubles heading into this game.

The San Francisco Dons lost a heart-breaker Thursday evening as they dropped an 85-84 decision to the BYU Cougars at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco. The Dons climbed back from an 11-point deficit in the first half and an eight point deficit in the final 3:23 but came up just short as they missed a pair of shots in the closing seconds that would have secured the win.

BYU climbed on top early in the game, but struggled to put the Dons away. The Cougars took the first lead and held it for over 39 minutes of game time. Matt Carlino led the way with 30 points, Noah Hartsock added 16 points and Charles Abouo added 15 points. Carlino was the hero of the night for BYU as he scored the game-winning basket with 23 seconds left.

San Francisco grabbed their first lead of the game with 46 seconds left when Rashad Green hit a jumper to give the Dons an 84-83 lead. The Dons had a chance to put the game away with free throws 19 seconds later. Angelo Caloiaro initally stripped the ball from Noah Hartsock, which Hartsock quickly recovered. The BYU forward went up for a shot but Caloiaro came from behind to block the ball into the hands of Perris Blackwell.

The Dons forward was quickly fouled and sent to the line looking to extend the Dons lead. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, and BYU took over. Carlino drove to the lane and made what proved to be the game-winning layup with 23 seconds left. The Dons were led by Caloiaro who scored 23 points, while Blackwell scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

San Francisco drops to 7-7 in conference play and remains in fifth place behind Loyola Marymount. The Dons remain a game ahead of Portland. USF hosts Gonzaga on Saturday before wrapping up regular season play hosting Saint Mary's.

BYU got a key win Thursday evening as they remain a half game up on the surging Loyola Marymount Lions. LMU went into Moraga on Wednesday and stunned Saint Mary's to improve to 10-4 in conference. BYU travels to Santa Clara on Saturday before their monster showdown at Gonzaga on Thursday. That game could hand Saint Mary's the WCC regular season conference title, or it could set up a potential split champion.
