Both the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers would not have won their respective games this past weekend if they hadn't had excellent play from their special teams. And in line with their outstanding play, the Bay is sporting both NFL special teams players of the week as 49ers kicker David Akers and Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour took home the honors for each of their impressive achievements during the Christmas weekend.

Seymour blocked two important field goals in the Silver and Blacks 16-13 overtime win over their AFC West rivals the Kansas City Chiefs with playoff implications for both on the line. Seymour's first block came on the last play before halftime ensuring the Chiefs brought no momentum into the locker room. His second came on the last play of regulation, blocking the potential game-winning 49-yard attempt, forcing overtime and eventually a Raiders win.

As for Akers, he sank four field goals from multiple distances (53, 29, 44 and 39 yards), including the eventual game-winner. Akers would end up scoring 13 points for the 49ers, sealing their 19-17 win against the Seahawks in Seattle. Akers, the 13 year veteran from Louisville, surpassed Neil Rackers record of 40 field goals made in a season as well; Akers currently has 42 makes this year. He also surpassed 49ers legend Jerry Rice for a franchise-record 156 points in a single season. Rice's previous record was 138.

The Oakland Raiders managed to scrape together a much-needed win in Week 16 by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 16-13 in overtime. Saturday's win once again relied heavily on the amazing feet of the awe-inspiring kicker/punter team of Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler.

Lechler continued to prove just how indispensable an elite punter can be, continually keeping the Chiefs out of scoring range with his long, pinpoint punts. He punted four times for 217 yards and an average of 54.3 yards per punt. All of that with only one touchback.

Janikowski was the offensive star for Oakland, scoring 10 of the 16 total Raiders points. He was three-for-four on field goal attempts. The only attempt that he missed was a 58-yarder which came after the Raiders got a delay of game penalty on a faked 53-yard field goal attempt that initially seemed to result in an Oakland touchdown. Janikowski's field goals came from 28, 31 and 36 yards.

Denarius Moore led all receivers with 94 yards on four catches. He scored the only Raiders touchdown of the game on a 61-yard hail Mary bomb from Carson Palmer in the second quarter. Palmer was 16-for-26 for 237 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Michael Bush once again led all rushers with 70 yards on 23 carries, with a long of 11 yards.

The Oakland Raiders got back on the winning track on Saturday as they eked out a 16-13 overtime victory over the Kanas City Chiefs to improve to 8-7 on the season. The win snapped a three game losing streak that saw the Raiders drop out of the AFC West lead.

The Raiders received some help on Saturday as the Denver Broncos lost to the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets lost to the New York Giants. The Broncos loss moved the Raiders into a tie for the AFC West lead. The Jets loss moved Cincinnati at 9-6 into the final AFC wildcard berth heading into Week 17.

The Raiders need to beat the visiting San Diego Chargers next week and will also need another team to lose for Oakland to make the playoffs. As it currently stands, Denver and Oakland split head-to-head and have the same record against divisional and conference opponents. That means the tiebreaker moves on to record against common opponents, which the Broncos would win.

If the Broncos win, Oakland can get into the playoffs if the Bengals lose at home to the Baltimore Ravens next week (assuming Oakland wins). Oakland wins the tiebreak over the Jets and Titans due to strength of victory and would hold the tiebreak over Cincinnati due to record against conference opponents. Accordingly, an Oakland win and Cincinnati loss means the Raiders win the wild card.

Got all that?

The Oakland Raiders needed a win in Week 16 over the hometown Kansas City Chiefs in order to keep their playoff hopes alive for at least one more week. It looked like they were well on their way to a win when they saw their lead slip away in the fourth quarter once again. Luckily, they were able to block a field goal in order to send the game to overtime.

The star of the game for the Raiders was kicker Sebastian Janikowski, who once again came through in the clutch. He was 3-for-4 on field goal attempts and scored nine of Oakland's 16 points. The only field goal he missed was a 58-yard attempt in the second quarter following a botched fake field goal play that resulted in a delay-of-game penalty. That kick fell just short.

The only touchdown of the game for the Raiders came in the third quarter on a 61 yard touchdown pass from Carson Palmer to Denarius Moore.

The Chiefs tied up the game in the fourth quarter on a pass from Kyle Orton to Dwayne Bowe that tied the score 13-13 with 1:04 left. The Raiders were able to block a short field goal attempt thanks to amazing play from the defensive line to send the game to overtime.

The Raiders won the coin toss and elected to receive. They moved 58 yards downfield on four plays and Janikowski knocked in the 36-yard field goal for the much-needed Raiders win by a final score of 16-13.

The Oakland Raiders held onto a lead in the fourth quarter of their Week 16 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, only to watch that lead slip away late in the game once again. Luckily, the Raiders have not lost the game just yet. The game has headed into overtime due to a fourth-quarter Chiefs comeback.

A Chiefs 49-yard screen pass set up a touchdown pass from Kyle Orton to Dwayne Bowe that tied the score at 13 apiece with only 1:04 remaining in the game. That pass capped off a five-play, 80-yard drive to bring the Kansas City crown to life and pump up the Chiefs players.

The Raiders managed to block a field goal attempt as time expired in regulation, keeping Oakland alive and sending them to overtime wit the score tied 13-13.

The Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs are squaring off in Week 16. Through three full quarters of play, the game remains a low-scoring affair, as the score stands at 10-6 in favor of Oakland entering the final quarter.

Penalties continue to be a huge problem for Oakland, as they have been all season. Just as one example: on a kickoff return early in the third quarter, the Raiders had both twelve men on the field and committed an illegal block in the back. They have 14 unforced penalties through the first three quarters.

The Raiders were finally able to find the end zone midway through the third quarter, as quarterback Carson Palmer launched a deep bomb to Denarius Moore for a 61-yard touchdown pass that put the Raiders up 10-3 at that point. The touchdown was much needed as both teams are having a lot of trouble capitalizing on red zone opportunities.

Ryan Succop closed the gap a bit for the Chiefs as he nailed a 20-yard field goal to bring the score to 10-6.

The Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs are engaged in a tough war in their Week 13 game as both teams try to stay alive in the postseason hunt for one more week. Through the first half of play, it has been far from a low-scoring affair. The score remains tied 3-3, which has been the score since the latter portion of the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the Raiders appeared to have caught a huge break on a brilliant play. Sebastian Janikowski lined up for a 53-yard field goal attempt. It turned out to be a fake play as the ball was snapped to tight end Brandon Myers, who scrambled into the end zone for an apparent touchdown. It was waved off, however, as the Raiders snapped the ball after the play clock had wound down and were charged with a delay of game penalty. Janikowski attempted the subsequent 58-yard field goal, which fell just short, bouncing off the crossbar.

Kickers for both teams are 1-for-2 in their field goal attempts. Carson Palmer has thrown two interceptions, while Kyle Orton has thrown one. Both teams have been charged with over 50 yards of penalties, while each gaining less than 160 total yards.

If you had any doubts about what it was like to be an Oakland Raiders fan, their Week 16 game against the Kansas City Chiefs is becoming just as nail-biting and tough to watch as most members of Raider Nation probably expected.

In a play that was an example of the entire Raiders season, Sebastian Janikowski came onto the field to attempt a 53-yard field goal. The snap came and the play turned into a fake field goal that appeared to be a touchdown run by tight end Brandon Myers. The Raiders celebrated for a moment before the officials called off the play and awarded the Raiders a five-yard penalty due to delay of game. On the replay, it was clear that the Raiders snapped the ball well after the play clock reached zero.

Janikowski then attempted the 58-yard field goal, which was straight but hit the crossbar and was ruled no good.
