Football Outsiders does not release what would be considered traditional NFL power rankings. They are numbers-oriented so any rankings they provide are based more on their various proprietary statistics. They use DVOA as one of their primary tools for measuring the performance of teams and assessing where they stand in relation to each other.

Through six weeks, Football Outsiders' DVOA ratings rank the San Francisco 49ers second and the Oakland Raiders ninth. The 49ers rating benefits from a strong schedule thus far, a number one ranked special teams unit and a third ranked defense. The Raiders benefit from a fifth ranked offense and a sixth ranked special teams unit.

For the 49ers, the rest of their schedule takes a hit as they get five NFC West games mixed into their final ten games. They also face the Ravens and Steelers, but they have enough teams lower down that even if they continue to win, their DVOA will drop a little bit.

For the Raiders, the question is how their offense will hold up in light of the injury to Jason Campbell and their trade for Carson Palmer. Although Darren McFadden is considered the engine of this offense, they are actually balanced in the eyes of DVOA with a seventh ranked pass offense and sixth ranked rush offense. It remains to be seen how Palmer impacts the offense, so we'll just have to wait and see over the coming weeks.

CBS Sports NFL power rankings and SB Nation NFL power rankings were both released this morning and they both have the 49ers ranked number five. Both have come around to the idea that the 49ers are indeed a legit NFL contender in 2011 following their big road win against the Detroit Lions. The road win improved them to 3-0 on the road and 5-1 overall.

CBS Sports had an interesting comment in discussing the 49ers: "Is it time to think of them as a serious Super contender? They play in a soft division and they're good, which could mean a first-round bye." The 49ers are moving up the food chain in the NFC, but at the end of the day the road to the Super Bowl goes through the Green Bay Packers. On any given Sunday any team beat another team, but the Packers are playing incredibly solid football.

On the other side of the Bay, the Raiders have continued their resurgence with a win over the Cleveland Browns that improved them to 4-2. CBS Sports ranked the Raiders No. 8 and SB Nation ranked the Raiders No. 12. The CBS ranking actually reflects the recent Carson Palmer trade, while SB Nation's was written just before the deal went down. That trade is an interesting one. If Palmer has a resurgence it looks great for the Raiders. If he struggles, it is abysmal for them. Personally, I'm rooting for success. It is high time we had a 49ers-Raiders Super Bowl.

ESPN released their week seven NFL power rankings and they appear to have fully jumped on the San Francisco 49ers bandwagon, while also continuing to provide an improved ranking for the Oakland Raiders. In their latest rankings, ESPN has moved the 49ers from No. 9 to No. 4, which is the biggest leap of the season. They moved the Raiders up from No. 11 to No. 9.

The 49ers big move was due to their huge road win over the previously undefeated Detroit Lions. The 49ers won their third road game of the season and took a 2 1/2 game lead in the NFC West with the rough, hard-fought victory at Ford Field. The 49ers head into their bye with as much momentum as any team in the league.

The Raiders held off the Cleveland Browns and improved to 4-2, leaving them 1/2 game back of the San Diego Chargers in the AFC West. They lost Jason Campbell to a broken collarbone in the process, but are reportedly about to replace him with Bengals QB Carson Palmer. This could prove to be a brilliant all-in move, or it could blow up in the Raiders faces. Definitely an Al Davis-style move. They face the Kansas City Chiefs at home after the bye.

We provide a look at the state of the NFL in our week seven power rankings. The 49ers went on the road to secure a huge victory over the Lions, while the Raiders secured another emotional home win while losing their QB to a broken collarbone.

The NFL is through week six and we are left with one undefeated team. The Detroit Lions were knocked off at home by the San Francisco 49ers leaving the Green Bay Packers as the lone undefeated team in the NFL. You could make arguments the Ravens are playing better defense but for now, the undefeated champs remain at the top of the power rankings. A loss might not even be enough to move them down, depending on the nature of the loss of course.

The 49ers and Raiders both made big moves this week thanks to key wins. The 49ers win at Detroit was enough to leapfrog the Raiders, but as has been the case for much of this year, I have kept these teams locked at the hip. They have had different styles of wins, but both are winning big games when they need to. Whether it be Oakland going on the road and knocking off Houston or the 49ers heading to Philadelphia and Detroit and grabbing wins. They are statement victories no matter how you look at them.

The middle lower of the pack did not see a whole lot of change. With power rankings, previous positioning can sometimes make it difficult to move certain teams too far one way or the other. Suddenly we are left with a few teams not moving in spite of wins. Some big wins could get some movement, but basically we have the usual parity-inspired logjam in the middle of the NFL.

On to the Week 7 NFL Power Rankings (previous week in parenthesis).
