Sports writers all throughout SB Nation appear to be a little bit more enthusiastic about the Stanford Cardinal than traditional media. The Cardinal stayed at 6th in the AP/USA Today polls, and they stayed at 5th in the Blogpoll. There probably won't be much change until Stanford loses or teams above them lose, but at the moment Andrew Luck's team seems to be the class of the conference.

Stanford received one first place vote from Brian Cook of MgoBlog, founder of the Blogpoll. Brian has had the Cardinal ranked number one since the start of the season based on the way they blew through the Pac-10 the last two months of the 2010 regular season and the array of star power they brought back. Brian probably hasn't watched much Stanford football yet, but they haven't been quite as consistent as he probably thought they would be. It's probably why he stands alone in his number one ranking of the Cardinal.

The week three college football rankings are being released and the newest edition of the AP Poll has Stanford remaining sixth overall. The Cardinal went on the road and easily defeated the Duke Blue Devils 44-14. The top of the rankings featured fairly modest matchups for each team, and thus few changes. Alabama did defeat a ranked Penn State squad and that victory allowed them to leap-frog LSU in the AP Poll. Alabama had trailed the Tigers by six points and now lead them by six points.

The Cardinal did gain a bit of ground on No. 5 Florida State. The Seminoles wrapped up the cupcake portion of their schedule and lost a few points because of it. FSU led Stanford by 42 points in the rankings, but now leads them by 33 points. Of course, the upcoming schedule makes that point differential fairly irrelevant. In the biggest matchup of week four, the Seminoles host top ranked Oklahoma next Saturday in the biggest game of the week.

Barring an absolute blowout, a loss won't drop Florida State too far, but would be enough to get Stanford above the Seminoles. That is also assuming Stanford handles its business at Arizona in their Pac-12 opener. The Cardinal will be favorites in that game as Andrew Luck looks to further his Heisman campaign.

LSU and Boise State have their own intriguing matchups next week as well. The Tigers open SEC play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Broncos take on the Toledo Rockets. Both are road games and considering how well the Rockets hung with Ohio State, Boise State could have their hands full.

Heisman hopeful Andrew Luck got off to a bit of a slow start against Duke on Saturday but finished off very strong, eventually taking out the Blue Devils down in Durham by a score of 44-14 to give them a 2-0 jumpstart on their season.
The Associated Press released their first regular season Top 25 poll and the Stanford Cardinal have risen from No. 7 to No. 6 thanks primarily to Oregon's ugly loss to the LSU Tigers. It helped that Stanford easily defeated the San Jose State Spartans, but they were not going to receive a whole lot of bonus points for the win. The Cardinal picked up 63 points in the AP poll and actually closed the gap with now No. 5 Florida State, trailing them by only 42 points.

Oklahoma lost four first place votes as the LSU Tigers were richly rewarded by the AP voters. They climbed from fourth to second, leap-frogging Alabama and gaining 16 first place votes in the process. Nobody is really "in the driver's seat" at this point in the process, but LSU did the most for their cause with the win over Oregon. Even if Oregon ends up proving vastly overrated this year, the early win gets LSU in prime position in the polls.

The Boise State Broncos were the second beneficiary this week following their strong road victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. The Broncos climbed from No. 5 to No. 4 and gained 110 points in the poll, leaving them less than 100 points behind Alabama at No. 3. The Broncos schedule is not as strong as some of the team's ahead of them, so they will look to take advantage of every chance they get this season to climb into a possible national title game appearance.

The USA Today/Coaches Poll was released Tuesday morning following the Labor Day weekend and the Stanford Cardinal remain situated at number six in the rankings. The Cardinal handily dispatched the San Jose State Spartans 57-3, but given the level of competition it is not surprising the Cardinal did not rise in the rankings. They were leap-frogged by Boise State while Oregon dropped to 14.

Oklahoma retained their lead atop the rankings and actually added a first place vote. Alabama lost four votes to Oklahoma and LSU, with the Tigers climbing to seven first place votes and third place. Florida State also moved up one spot to fourth with their win over Louisiana-Monroe.

Boise State was the big beneficiary this week as they climbed two spots on the back of their dominant road win over the Georgia Bulldogs. The Broncos schedule took a hit this past week with TCU's upset loss to Baylor. The loss dropped TCU to No. 25 and hurts the Broncos schedule. Boise State made the move to the Mountain West, but the loss of BYU and Utah will cost them as they make their bid for a shot at the national championship.

Stanford travels to face the Duke Blue Devils in a tune-up for the Cardinal's Pac-12 opener against Arizona on September 17. It's a fairly quiet week in the rankings as the only ranked matchups feature teams further down the polls.

The Stanford Cardinal had the most impressive performance of the weekend in the conference against the San Jose St. Spartans, and currently look like the class of the conference. And the NCAA rankings are likely to show it, as they'll probably be tops in the Pac-12 when the new polls are released Tuesday.

The Oregon Ducks, beset by penalties and turnovers and injuries, struggled mightily in their season opener against the LSU Tigers, and are likely to drop at least several spots. It'd be hard to see them staying ahead of Stanford after their performance, even if their loss came against a top 3 opponent. Oregon will need to drop four or five spots to move past Stanford, which is well within the realm of reason.

It's not looking like there'll be any serious contenders (yet) to Stanford's current Pac-12 reign. The only other Pac-12 team ranked is USC, and they barely scraped by Minnesota. Arizona State could potentially be ranked after their victory over UC Davis, but they'll have to beat some real competition (which will come this week against Missouri) before anyone takes their bid seriously.

The college football season starts in two weeks and we have another view of the field as the Associated Press released their first poll of the new season. The 2011 AP college football poll has Oklahoma number one and the Stanford Cardinal sitting at seventh. The Cardinal are sixth in the coaches poll.

The current rankings open the door for a shakeup right off the bat. The number three Oregon Ducks face the LSU Tigers in Arlington, Texas in the first monster matchup of the season. Although it's a long season, the winner of this contest puts themselves in the early driver's seat for a serious BCS opportunity.

The number five Boise State Broncos face a tough challenge early on as they travel to Athens, GA to face the 19th ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Boise will be a tough team this year, but road contests can always be tough and an upset would not be shocking.

These two games could have Stanford in the AP top five a week into the season.

The first 2011 preseason college football coaches poll slots the Oklahoma Sooners at No. 1, with Stanford standing sixth. We'll provide updates on additional polls as they are released. For more on the Cardinal, visit Rule of Tree.

The 2011 NCAA football season is a month away with the first games scheduled for September 1, 2, 3 and 5. Naturally that means it's time to start the preseason hype train for a few lucky teams. We've seen preseason award lists released, but now the big boys are getting in on the action.

USA Today released their preseason coaches' poll and have voted Oklahoma the overwhelming number one team in all the land. Alabama, Oregon and LSU are all getting first place votes as well, but Oklahoma is leading the way with 42 of a possible 59 first place votes.

The Stanford Cardinal find themselves ranked sixth, which says a lot about the respect for the new coaching staff and quarterback/preseason Heisman favorite Andrew Luck. The Cardinal face a tough task even with a potential Heisman trophy winner. The loss of Jim Harbaugh and much of his coaching staff is the big question mark. However, the Cardinal also lost FB Owen Marecic, DT Sione Fua, WR Ryan Whalen, and CB Richard Sherman. They'll need to get some quality competition at those positions if they're going to represent this high ranking well.
