Since his return from the DL San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Ztio has been absolutely lights out, and Thursday night was no different against the San Diego Padres. Eli Whiteside homered, Pablo Sandoval extended his hitting streak to 18 straight games, and the Giants topped the Pads by a score of 2-1 at AT&T Park.

Zito (W 3-1) was brilliant in his eight innings of work, allowing only one earned run on four hits, while walking only one Padre and striking out seven of them. The lone blemish for the night was a Ryan Ludwick home run in the seventh, but besides that Zito was untouchable. His curve was on point, making his fastball look much harder for batters to catch up to, showing some of his Cy Young form from back when he was with the Oakland A's. It marked Zito's third straight win in a row. Brian Wilson earned his 25th save of the season with his one hit scoreless ninth inning.

Eli Whiteside's homer in the third started the Giants off on the right foot, his third of the year, followed by an RBI single by Pat Burrell in the sixth to give the Giants the lead they needed. Miguel Tejada kept his hot streak going, going 2-3 with a double, while Pablo Sandoval's single in the sixth extended his hitting streak to 18 straight games now.

Padres starter Cory Luebke (L 2-3) lasted for six innings tonight, allowing both Giants runs on five hits, along with one walk and eight punch outs.

With the win the Giants move to 50-39 on the year. Full box score can be found here,

San Francisco will now host the New York Mets starting Friday as Ryan Vogelsong (6-1 2.13 ERA) will take the mound to take on R.A. Dickey (4-7 3.68 ERA) for the Mets. First pitch is set for 7:15 pm PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area, MLB Network, and KNBR 680 AM.

After the marathon game Wednesday night that saw heroics from a number of San Francisco Giants the team must now refocus and handle their business Thursday night against the San Diego Padres. Skipper Bruce Bochy made some tweaks to his lineup from last night as the G-Men look for a series tie with their NL West rivals.

Miguel Tejada will move back over to shortstop this evening, giving Bill Hall the start at second base. And despite his great night at the plate as well as in the field on Wednesday Andres Torres will not start this evening, meaning Aaron Rowand will lead off and play center field. Pat Burrell will get the start in left field and bat clean up while Eli Whiteside will be behind the dish to catch Barry Zito.

After the San Diego Padres took the first two games of their four game set at AT&T Park the San Francisco Giants weren't having it anymore. That's why they fought back hard to top the Pads in extra last night, and will look to end the series with a tie behind the resurgent Barry Zito Thursday night.

Zito (2-1 3.81) has had a new focus and determination on the mound since returning from the DL, winning both of his starts so far and will try to make it three in a row this evening. And in true Zen-Zito fashion, he tries to explain his new mindset on the mound:

"I'm not determined to prove myself to anybody," Zito said. "I'm determined to do the things I can do. Trying to prove myself to the world, that's energy I don't need to waste. As long as I please myself, everything should be all right."

Zito 2is 0-6 with a 5.40 ERA in eight outings in the last two years against San Diego, so maybe he has a little something to prove tonight.

Zito will face the Padres Cory Leubke (2-2 2.52 ERA), making his third career start since working his way into San Diego's rotation. This will be his first time facing the Giants in his career, but he has been very solid in his 27 appearances for the Pads since April, sporting a 1.24 ERA and a .149 batting average against.

Pablo Sandoval will look to extend his hitting streak to 18 straight games after going 2-5 with 3 RBI Wednesday night. Kung Fu is 10-21 against San Diego this season with six RBI's.

The San Diego Padres have had the San Francisco Giants number the last two seasons, especially at AT&T Park. And in true NL West fashion these two clubs scratched at clawed all game long, eventually leading to extra innings in China Basin. It took until the 14th inning, but was well worth it for Giants fans as Nate Schierholtz hit his second home run of the game to walk off on the Pads by a score of 6-5 in one of the most exciting games of the season thus far.

San Diego was getting to Madison Bumgarner early and often, notching all five of their runs off of him on nine hits in only six innings. Bummy struck out six and only walked one, but it was enough to make it seem like another insurmountable lead for these Giants.

The Giants bullpen was sensational as well, using five pitchers in eight innings of work, with all of them working at least one inning, notching at least one strikeout, while keeping the Padres scoreless throughout. Brian Wilson, Sergio Romo and Javy Lopez (W 4-1) all pitched two full innings, fanning 10 Padres between them. As a team the Giants had 19 strikeouts on the night, tying a team record at AT&T Park.

The Padres pitching staff was stellar as well, striking out 17 Giants along the way. Starter Dustin Moseley lasted seven and 1/3 innings tonight, allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. But unfortunately it was all for naught for San Diego as reliever Pat Neshek (L 1-1) took the loss.

The Giants offense was lead by two men, Pablo Sandoval and Nate Schierholtz, notching all six of the teams RBI's on the night. Pablo extended his hitting streak to 17 straight games going 2-5 with 3 RBI including a game tying double in the eighth that scored Andres Torres and Brandon Crawford to make the game 5-5. Pablo also made a game saving diving stop in the ninth that kept the Padres from scoring with runners on the corners, likely saving the game for the G-Men. Schierholtz blasted his first homer of the game in the fourth, a two run shot that bounded into the Cove, then his sixth of the season in the 14th that gave the Giants the most thrilling of wins.

Andres Torres was 3-6 on the night with a double, Brandon Crawford was 2-6, while Aaron Rowand was 1-5 with a double as well.

Tonight was the first walk off homer since for the Giants since 2009 when Juan Uribe took Guillermo Mota deep when he was still with the Dodgers. It also was the 10th walk off win for the Giants this year, the most of any team in the league.

With the win the Giants move to 49-39 on the year, cushioning their NL West lead over the D'backs to 2 games. Full box score can be found here.

The Giants will look to close out the series with a win Thursday night as Barry Zito (2-1 3.81 ERA) is set to take on Cory Leubke (2-2 2.52 ERA) for the Padres. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 pm PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

San Francisco Giants prospect Eric Surkamp is having himself a terrific year for their double-A affiliate Richmond Flying Squirrels, currently owning the lowest ERA in the Eastern League at 1.61 in 15 games along with being tied for third is strikeouts with 102. But Surkamp achieved a feat rarely seen in baseball, striking out 11 batters in 5 2/3 innings of relief, not as a starter. Make the jump to find out more.

He fanned 8 players during the last 9 outs of the game as he earned his fourth straight win in a row, leading the Squirrels to a 5-1 victory.
And it wasn't even an actual start.

The 23 year old Surkamp was a 2008 sixth-round pick, and is considered the Giants 8th best prospect in the Minors right now.
The rivalry between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres seems to grow more and more with each game played, especially when San Diego keeps winning. After the 5-3 loss the G-Men suffered Tuesday night the Pads have now won nine of their last 11 games at AT&T Park, and 12 of their last 15. But hopefully Madison Bumgarner will have something to say about that as he takes the mound to protect the Giants home turf.

Bumgarner (4-9 3.65 ERA) has become a quality start machine despite his losing record, pumping out another three in his last four starts, while posting a 2-1 record over that span. Bummy had some trouble with San Diego back in April, his first start of the season, lasting only three innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits.

The Padres, winners of two in a row and 10 of their last 15, will send out Dustin Moseley (2-8 3.07 ERA), another pitcher who's record doesn't accurately reflect his successes. The 29 year old has never faced the Giants in 49 career starts, but is 1-3 with a 2.74 ERA over his last eight starts while sporting an abismal 2.21 average run support this season, the lowest in the National League and second to last in all of baseball.

The lone bright spot in the Giants offense right now is Pablo Sandoval, who's 16 game hitting streak includes a .324 batting average with eight doubles, three home runs and 9 RBI since June 19. San Francisco is still yet to score at least seven runs at AT&T this season, a streak that hasn't been reached since the 1902 New York Giants back at the Polo Grounds. Hopefully that streak ends today.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 pm PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

Do you remember where you were when the Giants won the World Series? I know I do. And I'm sure we'd all have our own anecdotes and memories of that special moment in the life of a Giants fan. But Comcast SportsNet has taken it a step further with their 'Search for the World Championship Baby" as they try to find Giants fans that are not even born yet.

To commemorate the nine month anniversary of the Giants World Series win, Comcast is looking for a Giants championship lovechild, one that is born as close as possible to 7:54 p.m. PT on August 1, 2010; the official nine month anniversary to the minute of Brian Wilson fanning Nelson Cruz for the last out of game 5.

I'm sure there are some expectant Giants fans around the Bay Area right now that consummated their love of their team with a significant other on that magical a night, a night described like this in the Comcast press release:

Giants fans worldwide erupted in celebration. Over five decades of pent-up hope led to euphoria and heart-pumping delirium throughout the ranks of the Giants Faithful. Fireworks lit up the night, champagne corks popped, elation filled the streets and, no doubt, some people chose to celebrate more...privately.

Sounds like an introduction to a terrible romance novel...

But all innuendo aside, to enter the contest you must sign up online at CSNBayArea.com before July 31, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. PT. Parents will then have until August 15 to provide Comcast with all the official documentation, as well as the date and time of the child's birth to compete for the grand prize. The baby born closest to 7:54 p.m. PT on August 1 will be the winner of a $2,010 Giants gift card, a Commemorative brick paver at AT&T Park with the baby's name and the "Comcast SportsNet 2010 Giants World Championship Baby" title, as well as getting your baby's birth certificate autographed by the San Francisco Giants.

Not a bad way to be welcomed to the world is it?
