The San Francisco Giants have had themselves one hell of a road trip. From the double-header and heartbreaking walk-offs in Chicago, to the rain delay and record setting runs scored in Detroit, no game was cut-and-dry. Sunday proved no different as the Giants blew a lead over the Detroit Tigers not once but twice, caused by mistakes by the Giants pitching staff and defense, leading to a 6-3 loss at Comerica Park.

Ryan Vogelsong was off and on in his six and 2/3 innings this afternoon, allowing only two earned runs on four hits, but with four walks and five strikeouts. The bullpen behind him really struggled, especially Santiago Casilla, allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks in only one inning of work, giving the Tigers the lead for good. Jeremy Affeldt (L 1-2) allowed a walk after relieving Vogelsong, which eventually came back to bite the Giants as well after a Miguel Tejada throwing error with two outs in the seventh, one of three Giants errors on the day. As a team the Giants walked eight Tigers in all.

As for the Tigers' Rick Porcello (W 7-6) he was a bit wild himself, plunking three GIants batters and throwing multiple pitches in the dirt; one of which scored Emmanuel Burriss in the fifth. Porcello lasted for seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and six punch outs.

Cody Ross had the only RBI hit for the Giants, a single in the fifth, while Aubrey Huff scored on an groundout from Brandon Crawford in the fourth. Pablo Sandoval finsihed the day 1-5, extending his hit streak to 14 straight. Nate Schierholtz was 2-5.

With the loss the Giants move to 48-37 on the year. Full box score can be found here.

The Giants will head home for the fourth of July to begin a four game series with the San Diego Padres. Tim Lincecum (6-6 3.04 ERA) gets the start on America's birthday, facing off against the Padres' Clayton RIchard (4-9 4.09 ERA). First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

The Giants are looking for a sweep today when they take on the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a three-game set on the road. The defending world champions outlasted Detroit in a 4-3 game one, and then shelled them over the course of day two following some weather delays to the tune of 15-3. Miguel Tejada hit a grand slam on the first pitch back from the delay. It was an all-around thrashing, but a new day means a new game, and anything can happen.

Ryan Vogelsong will be hoping he can get that kind of run support, as Barry Zito pitched very well while on the mound in game two. Vogelsong and Zito aren't exactly competing at the moment, but neither can give any quarter, and some run support would certainly help Vogelsong, though he hasn't always needed it this year.

He's won four of his last five decisions, and this will be his first time facing the Tigers. Vogelsong is 6-1 on the season with a very solid 2.06 earned run average. His last outing was one in which he received considerable run support, a 13-7 win over the Chicago Cubs in which he lasted five innings, giving up six hits and six runs, though only three of them were earned, walking four and striking out six.

Rick Porcello has never faced the Giants either, but he's not on quite the same streak as the resurgent Vogelsong. Porcello has lost four of his last five starts, and the non-losing effort was a no-decision. Eighteen earned runs in his last three outings for a combined 11 1/3 innings means the Giants can probably reach him for runs. Any day can be the day he turns it around though, so it's anybody's guess.

It's a little more than a guess, of course, considering how hungry San Francisco seemed on Saturday. With Brandon Crawford going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored and Pablo Sandoval hitting a homerun, the Giants have tasted blood and will be swarming.

The game is set for 10:00 a.m. today.

When Saturday's game between the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants began, the question was how will Barry Zito hold up on short rest against this dangerous Tigers offense. But after the first inning it became how many runs can the Giants really score? And with the aid of three Giants home runs the answer to that question was 15, rocking Max Scherzer and the Tigers 15-2 at Comerica Park this evening.

Pablo Sandoval began the night right with a two run jack in the first, extending his hit streak to 14 straight. Brandon Crawford followed suit a few batters later for a three-run bomb, handing Barry Ztio an early 5-0 lead. Cody Ross added an RBI double in the third to make it 6-0, then the heaven's opened up about two and a half hours of rain before the game could resume. Max Scherzer (L 9-4) would not continue.

Miguel Tejada picked right up where the team left off, blasting a Grand Slam off of Brayan Villarreal almost immediately after the delay ended to make it 10-0. It was the first salami he's hit since 2008 and the 12th of his career. Aubrey Huff, Eli Whiteside, and Andres Torres added RBI's in the fifth and sixth innings to reach the season high 15 runs. Every Giants player in the lineup got a hit tonight, save for replacements Bill Hall and Andres Torres.

Barry Zito (W 2-1) showed true grit in his outing this evening, fighting through the elongated rain delay as well as pitching on short rest to put up six zeros on the potent Tigers, allowing only five hits, two walks, and one punch out. Even after the delay Zito was sharp, especially his curveball which was on point throughout the night.

Jhonny Peralta and Brandon Boesch hit back-to-back jacks off Guillermo Mota in the seventh, the only runs the Tigers would score all night. Mota got his first save of the year for his three innings of work.

With the win the Giants move to 48-36 on the year. Full box score can be found here.

San Francisco will send Ryan Vogelsong (6-1 2.09 ERA) out Sunday to take on Rick Porcello (6-6 5.06 ERA) for the Tigers. First pitch is set for 10:05 a.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

The San Francisco Giants had a huge first inning against Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers, taking an early 5-0 lead after homers by Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Crawford. Cody Ross added another RBI in the third with a double before the rains came in.

San Francisco Chronicle beat writer Hank Schulman fears the worst for the rest of the game. via Twitter:

I can’t answer the central question of whether this game gets going again. That’s an awful lot of water for the field, track to absorb

It’s still too early for the game to be called complete, so they would have to come back early tomorrow and finish it up.

Mr. Schulman also brings us a bit of news of second baseman Freddy Sanchez, claiming that he is taking light swings with a Fungo bat and is “very optimistic about where he’s at” according to skipper Bruce Bochy. Although hesitant to give a concrete answer, Bochy sees a possible August return for Freddy if all goes well.

Barry Zito is hanging in there through two innings pitched before the delay. He’s allowed two hits and one walk thus far.

As the San Francisco Giants continue to roll through interleague play, they’ll send out Barry Zito Saturday against the Detroit Tigers on short rest, something Zito has no problem with.

“I don’t really make a big deal out of it as far as physically,” Zito said. “You’re either good to go or you’re not. … My body certainly can handle whatever the demands are. I think it should be no problem to go out there and throw 100-plus pitches.”

Zito’s recent return from the DL has given the lefty a new pep in his step as he got the win for his seven innings against the Cubs earlier this week as part of a double-header, and looks much more in control of himself on the mound. Zito owns a 7-6 record with a 3.09 ERA in 15 career starts against Detroit. His last start came in June of 2008, a start where he lasted only two innings.

Zito will face the Tigers Max Scherzer, another very bright spot in the Tigers rotation alongside Justin Verlander. The former Arizona Diamondback is 1-2 with a 2.60 ERA in three career starts against the Giants, and is shooting for his 10th win of the season this evening.

Pablo Sandoval will be looking to extend his 13 game hitting streak for the Giants as well, carrying the offense last night with two huge RBI doubles. The Panda is also amongst the favorite Giants for an All-Star bid despite missing a big chunk of the year with a broken hamate bone in his hand.

First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

The mysteries inside Brian Wilson's beard include raw strength and emotion, both of which came to the surface Friday night in a major way. After being relieved by Jeremy Affledt with his second blown save in as many days, Wilson decided to go off on a Gatorade jug in the dugout, evening including a teammate's baseball bat for maximum damage inflicted. Make the jump to check out the video, and like Wilson himself, it's awesome.

The four hits and two earned runs allowed by the Bearded Savior is most definitely outside of his norm, and even more so is blowing two saves in back-to-back opportunities. There is rarely a time he takes the mound where it doesn't get interesting; a walk here, an hit there. But even rarer still is an opportunity when the Giants have more than a marginal lead, which is why his saves are always so intense.

But the self-certified ninja definitely lost his zen-like focus tonight, going absolutely ballistic on the Gatorade a la Carlos Zambrano, as well as some shots on the concrete wall with the bat. Check out the video for yourself, it is spectacular.

The Comerica Park cleaning crew must love to see this kind of thing happen...

After back-to-back heartbreakers at the hands of the Chicago Cubs the San Francisco Giants were in need of some offensive output at Comerica Park against the Detroit Tigers. And behind another brilliant performance from Madison Bumgarner and some well timed hitting by Pablo Sandoval the Giants came out on top by a score of 4-3.

Pablo got the G-Men off on the right foot with an RBI double in the fifth, then an RBI ground rule double in the ninth. The Giants added two more much needed runs in the ninth with a bases loaded walk of Nate Schierholtz and Brandon Crawford as Detroit staged a late rally against the Giants bullpen.

Brian Wilson, who eventually got the win, gave up two more runs in the ninth as Brandon Inge hit an RBI single then a throwing error by Manny Burriss scored Ryan Raburn. Jeremy Affeldt was brought in to clean up and get the save, his third of the year.

Bumgarner pitched seven and 1/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing only an RBI single to Maglio Ordonez . Bummy gave up only five total hits and one walk while fanning nine Tigers. Unfortunately he took a no decision for the game as the Tigers staged their late rally.

Former Giant Brad Penny also pitched very well, lasting for seven innings while allowing only run, with two walks and two strikeouts. Closer Jose Valverde took his second loss of the year for his work in the ninth, allowing three earned runs.

As a team the Giants struggled once again, leaving 13 men on base. But with Pablo's hit streak extending to 13 games now, he may have to carry the brunt of the load until the rest of the squad can figure it out at the plate. Aaron Rowand had another nice showing, going 3-5 with a double. And as long as Torres continues to struggle as much has he has, Rowand should be the starting center fielder until he can get it all situated again.

Pat Burrell was set to start in the left field, but was a late scratch with some right foot soreness. It shouldn't be too big a problem for Burrell or the team, but it was enough to keep him from making his start.

With the win the Giants move to 47-36 on the year. Full box score can be found here.

San Francisco will send out Barry Zito (1-1 4.95 ERA) for his second start since returning from the DL to face Max Scherzer (9-3 4.47 ERA) for the Tigers. First pitch is set for 4:05 with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

The San Francisco Giants are getting set for game one of three against the Detroit Tigers. The Giants are coming off of two straight losses at the hands of the Chicago Cubs, while the Tigers are coming off a win over the Mets after dropping the first two-of-three.

Madison Bumgarner is taking the mound tonight for the defending world champions, and he's riding a bit of momentum. His last outing was an eleven strikeout effort over seven shutout innings against the Indians, coming directly after an outing in which he'd given up eight runs against the Minnestoa Twins in the very first inning. Bumgarner is sporting a rather poor 4-9 record with a 3.84 earned run average in sixteen starts. Bumgarner has never faced the Tigers in his career.

Brad Penny is going to be the counter to Bumgarner, and is 5-6 with a 4.66 ERA in sixteen starts of his own. He's 1-3 with a paltry 5.45 ERA in his last seven starts. His last outing was a no-decision against the Diamondbacks, giving up two runs in 6 2/3 innings, a game the Tigers would eventually win 8-3. Penny holds a 6-3 record over the Giants in nineteen starts, and a solid 3.05 ERA in the series.

The Giants will be looking to Pablo Sandoval for hitting support. Sandoval looked to come up big in the clutch in the finale against the Cubs, with a home run in extra innings, but Chicago tied it in the bottom half of the inning and Sandoval was robbed of late-game heroics. Still, he's on a 12-game hitting streak right now and should be a big factor for the Giants.
